Stolen Items While On Board?

Are fellow cruisers on board ship usually honest people? What I mean is: Has anyone ever had something "lost" or "misplaced" while on board ship and NEVER returned to them? If so, what did you do about it?

My very expensive sun tan lotion, was taken. Granted I left it at the ice cream place, but it would have been nice had someone picked it up and taken it to the Pursers Station, instead of keeping it for themselves

Sadly it does happen. I have to blame myself too for being stupid enough to leave it sitting, but... we were seated in a public seating area near a window. Got up and started toward the dining room when I realized I'd left my video camera in the chair. We'd only walked about 20, maybe 30' when we turned and ran back. That fast it was gone! We checked with lost and found several times a day for the duration of the cruise but it was never found. What really made me sick was that I'd been filming all day. My travel insurance covered the camera so I got a new one, but all those memories on the tape were gone forever.

It just sickens me how dishonest mankind can be truely.

I would go around and ask every passenger if they mind if I look into their bags and see if they had my item.

I did go around asking EVERYONE if they'd seen it. And the thing was it had my name written in big letters with a silver paint that wouldn't scratch off with leaving marks so would have been easily identifiable.

And yes, it can and does happen everywhere. My DSIL is dept. manager for a major department store and says you can't imagine how much stuff gets stolen on a daily basis. It's sad that people are like that.

That is so awful. I cannot imagine just picking up something that I did not purchase (and know it was not mine). Weather it is suntan lotion or a camera, that is just plain wrong!!!

That is horrible. It makes my bottle of sun tan lotion seem so trivial. There are so many dishonest people out there. I am really sorry for the loss of your most treasured pictures.

The flip side of this is a situation that happened to us on our last cruise. While on a shore excursion in Jamaica, a lady that was part of our group asked me to put her wrist watch in my camera bag (which was placed in a locker) while we did our water activity. At the end of the excursion, I completely forgot I had the watch, as did the owner, but I found it the next day. I spent the rest of the cruise trying to find her to return it - the purser was leaving messages in her cabin and I kept watching for her on board but never heard from her or saw her. I even emailed the tour operator asking them to please email this lady and have her contact me so I could mail the watch to her when we got home. Still never heard from her and I still have the watch. It's not an expensive watch but dang, I tried to get it back to her and she never responded.

That is so strange. But, perhaps she wanted to give you a gift and that was her way of doing it. LOL:cool: Or perhaps she had stolen it herself and she was getting rid of it. Ahh, a little mystery story here ;)

Never looked at it that way! I also tried to get the Purser to take it and keep it in 'lost and found' but they said they would prefer I keep the watch and they would find the owner and get them in contact with me. Maybe the Purser was in on the scam??

There are also honest people. I dropped my bluetooth outside of a place I go to workout. I didn't realize I had done it. Well on a lark after I got home, DW called and asked if anyone had found one. Someone found it in the parking lot and gave it to the front desk. I was able to run down there and pick it up.

Hooray for all of the honest people!!!!

Ahh, and the case gets curiouser and curiouser. I would say you have a very expensive watch there. The watch is not expensive, but if you take it apart you will find a chip in there. And if that chip is put in a computer and if you had the correct password, it would reveal....

My daughter's fiance' is from South Korea. His visa paperwork and other paperwork was attached inside his passport. He had walked to a local store (fitness buff) to buy something and had lost it there. We were really worried that someone would find it and keep it as a souvenir or something. It would have been incredibly difficult and expensive to have replaced everything in it (I think he said that before it was all said and done it cost him $5000 in fees to come here). Fortunately, whomever found it turned it into the customer service desk.

I've never lost anything on a ship (knock on wood) and hope not to. It just blows me away how dishonest some people can be though....

And if you do no not have the right combination, the box will blow up. So, it is important that you find the right numbers as this artifact not only is worth zillions but there is also a key in the box that will open another box in a Paris bank that contains the treasures of...

BTW, if you get that far, I am going to be in Paris on my cruise on 9/12/08, so I would be most happy to help you out on this ;)

Joe! Funny you.:D

There's the flip side of the coin, too. I left my camcorder on a bench in the promenade area. Thought about it an hour later, and checked w/the purser - there it was! He said a little boy brought it to him.:)

Another time, I left my evening bag in a lounge, and it was also taken to the purser's desk.

There are nice folks out there!

I think we're both too wrapped up in Da Vinci Code scenarios. :)

Have a great time on your cruise... I'm envious. :(

My DB left is digtal camera in the buffet, he was drunk. It was never turned in. My DH lost his birth cert. on the same cruise....I had it in the safe. One night he went to get cash for the casino out of the safe, it was the last night. That night I was packing everything up and making sure we had every thing we would need to get off the ship and it was gone. I looked every where, even called the cabin steward, and the purses desk...no one had seen it. It was there the day before. Thank goodness customs didn't ask for it. We never did find it when we got home.

I was going through security check getting on the Conquest in New Orleans and generally I never carry a purse whenI travel. I put all my stuff in my carry on and my husband carries money document etc. Well it was just my son and me so I had my purse with documents tons of money and all Id's. I put my carry on and purse on the belt and when my carry on came out I grabbed it and off I went. It wasn't until twenty minutes later I realized no purse.

I found one of the security people explained I left my purse at the security checkpoint he told me not to expect to see it since they were in the process of firing everyone at the port for stealing. I thought I was going to vomit. It took about thirty minutes of me trembling and just knowing I wasn't going to get back on that ship, but someone had turned it in and yes that wad of money and everything was still there. I will say my faith in people was at a all time low and it was restored and made my trip more enjoyable. Oh and once you get on those ships it is no easy task convincing them you need to get back off-it seemed like an eternity before we found our way back down to the check in area. I will say that is one of the stupidest things I have ever done now I triple check before I walk away from those security things.
