cwstar Posted May 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2004 We are looking forward to seeing whales. Is it possible for the whale watching excursions to fill up and we not be able to go on one? Are there many chances to go? I would hate to go to Alaska and miss seeing whales.
cruiseaway Posted May 15, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 15, 2004 If you want to book one of the private tour companies, like Capt. Larry in Juneau, you need to book early. The ship sponsored tour may not fill up so quickly. From everything I have read if you can, booking through a private groups is better because the ship holds fewer people and can move around where the whales are. CruiseIsGood Posted May 15, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 15, 2004 In '02 we booked the first night on the Carnival Spirit for evening whale watching, separately unfortunately. One of our party didn't get a ticket since it was sold out before 6pm the first night! Luckily the shore excursion desk sold her one after hearing she got left out from our group. So book early if going through the ship too.
CruiseIsGood Posted May 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 15, 2004 CruiseAway, The catamaran booked through the ship can move everywhere the whales are too. (It also has a great appetizer buffet and wine/beer bar, as well as naturalists and local crew and underwater microphone for hearing the whales.) If you can't get Captain Larry, the ship tour will not dissapoint at all. They also all offer $100 guarantees that you'll see whales too. I did it twice, fantastic experience, everyone was able to see everything. Lots of walking around space above and below.
Budget Queen Posted May 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I would still book ahead and Orca Enterprises does fill up. You'll have a great time any way you tour.

xmas Posted May 17, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 17, 2004 Hi Zebra: What time did the evening whale watch start? We are going on HAL in 2 weeks. Would like to book the evening whale watch. Sounds really great. But we are not sure about eating dinner, etc. and the ship leaves port at 6:00. Thanks
CruiseIsGood Posted May 17, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 17, 2004 Most evening whale watching leaves at 6pm, so you won't make it. Don't worry about food if you book from the ship. They have a gigantic appetizer spread, free, and beer and wine, not free but reasonable. Denise
