Is France closed on Sundays?

Quite right Betty, it was said tongue in cheek as of course my earlier statement told how some businesses closed at lunchtime. However many small shops and businesses that do not depend on the tourist trade do indeed shut for the whole month.

I must admit to being surprised at how most of La Rochelle closed down with the QE2 in town.

We were in LeHavre in early May for one day and wished we had known that there was a car rental kiosk in the tourist info building! We went to Honfleu as part of ship tour and for what it cost the 3 of us, we could have rented a car for the day and paid for lunch and stayed as long as we wanted! So, dash off the ship ASAP and go to the car rental desk. If you aren't confident driving overseas, then take the aforementioned local bus. The tourist info folks have the schedules - there was one about 9AM to Honfleur with returns around noon and 3PM. Sunday will vary.

LeHarve is not without its charms if you appreciate poured concrete (it is, in fact, a UNESCO city because extensive WWII bombing of the port to stop the Germans caused many of the citys buildings to be lost as well and the rebuilding of the city was under the direction of an architect who loved poured concrete!). We had a wonderful dinner in LeHarve at a restaurant one of the ships chefs recommended........cab ride to and from was easy and not too costly. Get restaurant to call for a taxi as cabs don't seem to drive around looking for passengers.
