Ferry from the Ship to St. John??

We will be on the Caribbean Princess in October. Is there a ferry that goes directly from the ship area to St John? And if so, why do so many people mess with taking a taxi to Red Hook, then getting on the ferry?

There are no ferrys that leave from the two docks in St Thomas. You must either go to Red Hook or the waterfront of Charlotte Amalie to board a ferry.

Along the same lines, if the cruise ship gets in at 7am can you get to St. John, spend a bit of time and get back to St. Thomas by about noon? Or is that pushing it too much? Looking to visit St. John but also to take an afternoon tour on St. Thomas.

That's exactly what we are thinking. But I would like to take a ferry to St John from an area closer to the ship (instead of Red Hook).

The Charlotte Amalie ferry is closer to where the ships dock then Red Hook. However, it doesn't run as often and sometimes it hasn't been running at all. The time it takes to get to St. John is about the same either way. The Charlotte Amalie ferry is closer but the ferry ride is longer. The Red Hook ferry is a longer ride to get to but it is a much shorter ride.

Is there a way to know if it is running or not?

You can check virgin-islands-on-line. Add the www and .com. They have a great forum and you can ask there if it is running just before you leave. But to be 100% for sure (since it can change at any minute) what I would do is go to St. John using the Red Hook ferry. On the return you are at the dock for both so you can use which ever is leaving the soonest and they will know about the CA ferry at the ticket window.
