Tipping-Private Guides

Does anyone know what percentage is customary to tip a private guide for an all day tour?? We've never booked on our own before and we have a Pompeii/Amalfi coast tour. We want to make sure we tip our guide correctly (if he's good!)

It really depends on whether you have a good tour or not. If it is satisfactory a 10% tip is OK, but if it is great more is appropriate. If you were not happy, do not feel obligated to tip anything...it is supposed to be for excellent service; not a mandatory added "tax".
