New England Ports

We are doing the RCL Canada/New England Cruise on 9/28/07. I was just wondering is there much shopping to tourist attractions at the New England Ports near the port where the ship is docked. We haven't decided if we want to do any excursions or just wander around when we get off the ship. Thanks.

I’ll take care of Newport & Bar Harbor.

Both have shopping within easy walk of the tender docks.

For tourist attractions:

In Bar Harbor, #1 would be a tour of Acadia National Park. I would suggest Oli’s Trolley

( http://www.acadiaislandtours.com/ ) for that. #2 would be a whale watch trip which can be picked up at the town dock which is where the tender dock is.

In Newport, a tour of the mansions; you can take a local bus, you could walk (2 miles to the Breakers) or a ship’s tour. You can buy tickets online here: http://tickets.newportmansions.org/mansion.aspx?id=1000

Not sure what other ports but there is a ton of stuff near the dock area in Halifax! The harborfront has neat shops, restaurants, harbor tours etc. and same in Portland (if you are going there).. where you can also get tours from locals when you arrive. used to be a bunch of folks in terminal in Halifax when you got back to ship selling some pretty nice stuff.. not sure if they still do that (this was in '03)... doing that itin next year and can't wait! Love the ports

Yes, Halifax's Pier 21 cruise terminal building is still loaded with vendor stands!

In Halifax, there's also FRED (Free Rides Everywhere Downtown). FRED also goes up to the Citadel. However, at the pier when we were there last Sept. FRED started the run around 11:00. We walked around the peir area and then caught FRED along the way.

We will be in Halifax this Oct.
