I'll apologise now, but it's the dreaded formal night question.

Ultimate Balcony Dining. $50/person. Only if you have a balcony. There should be several threads on this if you do a search for UBD.

We've only tried the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast, and didn't need a balcony for that - once it was too cold, and once we didn't have a balcony anyway. Nancy

I've also done a ultimate balcony breakfast (we had it on our balcony while going through the locks of the Panama Canal). It is really only fancy room service. Liked it for the canal, but probably wouldn't do it again. My understanding is that the UBD actually requires a balcony and involves them waiting on you. It sounds really neat to me, and we plan on trying one night on our upcoming cruise.

Anyway back to the original thread.

We too are flying over from the UK on a charter in November.

Presume luggage allowance is only 44 lbs which ain't much.

Would not miss the formal nights for anything, think Xmas Party Wear.

My hubbie has a very lightweight M&S dinner suit which he wears with a bow tie once and a nice silver regular style tie the other. Even a blazer and flannels or a nice lightweigt lounge suit looks ok. Only one long sleeve evening shirt is needed as you can launder in between.

On casual nights, shorts sleeve shirts and chinos or linen trousers always look the part. I personally hate polos or t shirts, as a cruise should be treated like a 4* star holiday.

Have a great cruise (jeans free) !

We are approaching Elite level on Princess. While it is true that Princess, on some ships, has taken a more laidback attitude about formal night attire, there is still the chance that you might be turned away. This probably won't happen but there is a slim chance. A sports jacket is better than no jacket. You might wear it on the flight over so that it doesn't have to be packed.:)

Now THERE is an idea whose time has arrived. I don't suppose that you could do the same with the tuxedo. No, forget I said that.

Is this saying that someone might be turned away from the casino or bars for lack of a jacket on formal night. I've never seen nor heard of that happening.

Just another thought if you don't dress up for formal night i.e. tux etc are you allowed in the casino and bar areas etc.

You bet the casino and bar areas are happy to take your $$ anytime! The only place you risk being turned away on formal night, if you are not dressed formally, is the dining room. There may be some who are not happy with your wardrobe, but you will definitely be "allowed in" everywhere else on the ship. If you are dressed resort casual, rather than beach casual, you might not feel as many darts shot your way.

After reading many threads here on these boards, I have come to believe that there are some who would not allow you out of your cabin if not dressed per code.

I feel that I should explain why I posted the thread - I have cruised on P&O ships a few times parents lots and 'formal night' is formal 'everywhere' - Dining room, Theatre, Shows, Bars etc. Well at least 95% of passengers are.

I normally cruise with my daughter and parents and we all 'love to dress up'.

My partner on the other hand has always said that 'cruising was not his thing' but this year it's the got the better of him and hence we are going in November and both very excited. He's just not a dressing up person. Likes nice shirts and trousers it's just the dreaded Jacket.

So the problem at the moment is that he does not have a 'suit' not even a light weight jacket, let alone a 'tux' or 'DJ'.

I am sure if the cruise goes well he will get back from the cruise and book another and buy a 'tux' for next time.

Thank you all for your comments though and after reading them he did say he would rent one.

Christine

I think that they have petitioned Princess to keelhaul those people or hang them from the highest yardarm--do Princess ships have yardarms?

Good!

The Tux rentals through Princess are very reasonable and they are of good quality and fit (Cost is about $85.00,) American (If you give them good measurements.)

If you intend to cruise on the Princess line a lot purchasing a Tux is a good investment.

With dress becoming more casual all the time, I wouldn't waste money buying a tux. 10 years from now if you wear a tux on a cruise you will stick out like a circus clown. There likely will not even be such a thing as formal night on a cruise 10 years from now.

We're on the same roll call as you guys. We don't dress up anymore. We hit the pizza place or the Horizon Court. Most people change after dinner anyway. Smart casual is good. Come eat with us--we'll be hiding out somewhere other than the main dining rooms.

Many people people posting here now, may in 10 Years not be with us!

O.K. so I'm not too swift, but what is UBD?

Also note how the stupid question cleverly gets me subscribed to this thread, Now I can sit back and enjoy.

In case you don't know, you don't have to respond to a thread in order to subscribe to it. You can just click on the "Thread Tools" button at the top of the thread and then select "Subscribe to this thread." Not that I don't enjoy your comments! :)

I don't have my preferences set up to automatically subscribe to threads I respond to but use this tool for the ones in which I'm interested. :)

Well, shoot, I clicked the wrong link and darn if I didn't get unsubscribed. I do think I have a bit of a problem though in that I just can't keep my fingers from pounding the keyboard about a whole lot of subjects (most of which I know nothing about.)

I think I would stick with a long sleeve shirt...no tie on smart casual and definatly a tie on formal nights...I must be honest though...if you're going to wear a tie why not wear a long sleeve shirt...I have always though short sleeves and ties look a bit odd
