travel girl23 Posted August 25, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 25, 2007 We've done the Merida sightseeing and shopping tour and just this past June we did the Uxmal excursion. Both are interesting and totally different. We boarded a bus to Merida and the drive was about 1/2 hour. We saw some beautiful historic buildings plus the oldest cathedral on the North American continent. It is so beautiful and rivals those in Europe. We had time to do some shopping and got back to the ship by mid-afternoon. Just in time for a piece of pizza - LOL. We loved the Uxmal (pronounced Oosh-Mahl) Mayan ruins tour two months ago. We had two guides with us. One of the guides gave us a lot of interesting information on the drive to Uxmal. Once there, the other guide gave an excellent tour of the ruins. The grounds are beautiful. It was very hot when we were there so I highly recommend a hat, good walking shoes, an sunscreen. We did not take bug spray nor did we need it. After touring the ruins, there are food, drinks, clean restrooms, and a few small shops available. This was a great tour. We got back to the ship with about an hour to spare to shop at the terminal area. Oh, almost forgot, lunch was included and they gave us a sandwich, chips, banana, roll, and a bottle of water. The food was fresh and tasty. I highly recommend this tour also - so now you have to make a decision. Hope you have a wonderful cruise. quash8 Posted September 15, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 15, 2008 On the Carnival Fantasy Sept 8 in port on Sept 10 Thinking about these tours any suggestions cost on carnival if known or independent company Dzibilchaltun Ruins, Mexican Buffet & Horse Show $81 from the AUg 31 sailing of Ecstasy. Easy bus ride from Progreso, during which the guide gives you a pretty good background. The ruins are impressive if uninterpreted. Check out the cenote. Nice museum, but we were hurried through and couldn't read even half the displays. Excellent lunch (mole) at the hacienda. I'm not that big a fan of the singing, dancing and horsemanship, but I still enjoyed it.
