Kauai on Sundays

Our cruise will be stopping in Kauai on a Sunday. Somebody told me that's bad because most everything will be closed. Can someone with Hawaii experience please confirm or deny please? I'm depressed now thinking our stop there will be wasted.

Thanks.

I don't think that is true - I have been traveling to Kauai for the past 15 years on almost a yearly basis - and staying as long as a month at a time and never noticed that much stuff closed on Sunday. The Museum in Lihue might be closed on Sunday, but most restaurants and shopping are open on Sunday.

Enjoy!!

My grandparents live in Kauai and I go every summer and nothing is ever closed - all the stores, shops, activities are still up and running. Like Destcrz says, maybe only the museum or government buildings are closed that day.

You'll love Kauai! The best tropical scenery of all the Hawaiian islands.

No, things are pretty much "open" on Sundays. What we have found is this.... the State of Hawaii restricts tour operators from operating kayaking tours and most other tours that involve the rivers. After two cruises to Hawaii that stop on Kauai on a Sunday, I have found very few tour operators (other than a few that work directly for the cruise line) that will do tours on Sunday, none that will do kayaking (it's against the law). Of course, the helicopters still fly, and and there are other things to do, but it was and still is a big disappointment not to be able to do a kayaking tour up the river OR any tour out at the Priceville Ranch.

The State of Hawaii has reserved these activities for the residents of Hawaii and all of these types of tours are illegal. This is what we have found out.

OK, Spleen, after you posted what you did I began to wonder if we were being told something which was untrue. I emailed the Kauai Visitors Bureau last night to verify the information and this is the response I received. While they don't go so far as to say that it is a State law, they do verify that it can't be done. Still doesn't make any sense to me!

"Aloha,

Thank you for your email. I did get clarification on Kayak Tours for

Sundays from the State Office. It is true, no kayak tours on Sundays. It

is open to the public.

We were ther last week on the POH and rented a car for a drive to the Waimea Canyon. On the way back I wanted to stop at JoJo's for shaved ice since several people on the boards mentioned it. We drove past about 10:30 am and it was closed. We also saw a few other stores closed but it was still ealy Sunday and perhaps they opened later. By the port everything seemed open.

I had not heard before that these type of tours were illegal to run on Sunday. That's very interesting to hear - doesn't quite make a lot of sense to me but oh well!

So you're the infamous Spleen! A couple of months ago, there was an extensive thread concerning your whereabouts. Glad to hear you're still with us:D

I've never heard of Spleen but if you click on his name, you can see that he has posted in 2007 - looks like it's pretty limited, though. He did specifically respond to the board moderator about his absense.
