Blue Jean Question

I have been reading a bit about the issue of jeans onboard. Are they absolutely forbidden everywhere or just at dinner?

Blue jeans are common on cruise ships but just not at dinner although a few lines including NCL are now allowing them at dinner as well.

It looks like you're going to the Caribbean in November, and it will still be very warm. While jeans are okay on board (except in the dining room on most lines), they are quite warm and heavy to pack. You may want to rethink and go with a lighter weighted fabric.

DH and I were talking about this a couple of days ago, as hot as the Caribbean and Mexico can be, why would anyone want to wear jeans? Of course all we saw and the county fair this past weekend were jeans and it was very hot. I guess we are a little strange. We were jeans in the winter, come mid April til early Oct they are places in a drawer and forgotten. That being said, NCL now allows jeans in good condition at dinner and HAL will allow them on casual nights, usually the first and last night of the cruise. I think the printing is on the wall, all lines will soon buckle under pressure and jeans will be accepted at dinner.

I find this an interesting thread as jeans are pretty much the 'norm' on the Australian ships. I always take mine for days / nights when the weather is a bit cooler (i'm a bit of a frog and feel the cold). I don't wear them on shore though as it's usually too hot.

Jeans are also widely accepted in our dining rooms. While they're not really considered 'acceptable' for formal nights, a handful of people still wear them and are never turned away. Shorts are never acceptable at dinner in our dining rooms though, and I think that's fair enough.

Take a pair of comfy jeans!! You will need them if you plan to walk the deck early morning or late evening. It is always chilly, especially if you will be out at sea and not in port.

I've worn jeans in the dining room (not formal night) and I've seen my DH get turned away for wearing denim on a different cruise. It's a toss up anymore. Since designer jeans are soooo much more expensive than dress slacks/pants I think more cruise lines are accepting them now.

Someone is keeping a list of the mass market cruise lines and whether or not they now allow jeans in the dining room (on non-formal nights). I don't remember who it was, or I'd look for it for you. From what I remember, it is now about half and half.

Unless someone is tacky enough to leave the price tag on, 99.9% of us would never know how much they cost. They are still jeans.

That used to be a general rule, but is no longer. Times have changed. It isn't the fabric but rather how it is used.

That's not true in the fashion world. That's also not to say that some don't wear denim to formal events (like award shows), but it's still casual.

I am leaving tomorrow for my cruise and I'm taking jeans. I will not be wearing them to the dining room, but I will be wearing them around the ship and while ashore. Anyone that has a problem with it can pucker up and kiss my grits!

Wow, don't get so excited; no one will have a problem with you wearing jeans, where did you get that idea? Most are talking about in the dining room for dinner, not anywhere else.

Oh, I was going by some past threads I have read concerning Celebrity. Talking about people not in dinner wear after 6pm, even though those non-dressed people weren't in the dinning room. Just walking around the ship. I've decided to take my jeans and not let it bother me!

Good for you, this is one thing that has always bothered me: I can live with the formal dining, in some ways I rather like it, but to look down their noses if we choose to get comfortable on our vacation after dinner blows my mind. Now get out of here and have a great cruise.
