Be careful what you pack

The newspaper indicated that the Freedom was delayed for hours and the terminal evacuated because some moron packed a child's belt buckle shaped like a hand grenade in their checked luggage.

Hope they threw those people off the ship or at least posted their pictures and cabin number.

Guess this might put to rest the thought that they "can't x-ray" all that luggage going onto a Freedom class ship. Sounds like they do x-ray it all, and sounds like they actually look closely at what they're x-raying.

Packed it where? In their carry-on or other baggage. I do believe there was a lack of forethought on the part of the parents, especially if it was th carry-on.

From the original post:

...because some moron packed a child's belt buckle shaped like a hand grenade in their checked luggage.

If it was in carry-on it could have been isolated much faster, I would assume, since the person would actually be carrying it when caught.

I didn't even know they MADE belt buckles that were shaped like grenades! :D This reminds me of something a man posted on CC one time. I don't remember the details of the story, but the handcuffs that went with one of the kid's Halloween costumes ended up in the dad's carryon, and they searched his bag, found the cuffs, and took them away! He said something about being embarrassed that people thought they were HIS handcuffs! :D

Here's the story from the St. Petersburg newspaper:

"A child's grenade-shaped belt buckle caused a lengthy delay for passengers who were trying to leave a cruise ship Sunday, a Royal Caribbean spokeswomen said. Thousands of cruise passengers aboard the Freedom of the Seas vessel waited several hours as a Miami-Dade police bomb squad investigated the scene. Transportation Security Administration workers spotted the belt buckle while screening a suitcase. Passengers were kept aboard the boat as a precaution, said Lynn Martenstein, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman. Some passengers were told to go back onto the ship as the terminal was evacuated, one passenger told the Miami Herald."

So it is a bit confusing, was the screening being performed as new suitcases were being loaded, or was it a carry-on? Certainly they aren't screening the luggage coming off the ship?

returned from the Freedom yesterday ,we carried our luggage off the ship ourselves we were off the ship by 7.30 am had no problems, this is the first we are hearing about this, must have happened after we left.

I am glad everyone can't do that, but I expect on the next trip we will take our stuff off at the early departure time since we want to see if we can catch an early flight...but at least doing so should let us get off before anyone's luggage being scanned would cause us a delay.

this Belt buckle fiasco was totally unavoidable! I have 2 teen boys, and what the grenade buckle is is a brand of clothing called Grenade. Its a snowboarding company. My 17 year old has a sticker on his snowboard, that looks like a grenade. I have seen the belt buckle in our "ski surf and snow" retail store in a nearby mall. (I think this may be a west coast type of logo, I have seen the stickers on some cars teens drive in our neck of the woods).

So, I am familiar with grenade thing, but my God, if I knew my son (sons) had something like that in their suitcase I would flip out on them. DUH!!! This is why I always oversee their packing list and check their luggage before we leave, no matter how old they are!! Snowboard stickers are fine, but to wear or pack a grenade belt??

I feel soooo bad for those poor people having to be put out like that.

Glad to see the x-ray machines are hard at work!! :D

by the way, not condoning this at ALL, just trying to shed a little light on what I think the item was and stood for.

And the TSA/Bomb squad could not tell the difference between a belt buckle and a real grenade? That it took them "several hours" !?!!?

I mean did they then go through every bag with a fine tooth comb???????

If so how did that belt buckle make it onto the ship in the first place?

And if it was bought in a port how did it pass though security.

Lots of questions here for sure.

If something is seen in a suitcase through an x-ray that appears to be an explosive device, the screeners are not going to open the suitcase and look at it closer. Would you? That would be foolish.

In the time it takes to call a bomb squad, further x-ray the bag, ion scan it for explosives, etc, the process could very well take hours.

That's why it's up to the passengers to not pack items shaped like bombs.

I applaud the TSA for spotting this item in a passengers luggage.

In this day & age to travel with such an item is asking for trouble.

Luckily for all the people inconvenienced this time it was just a fake.

Fashion accessories & childrens toy's shaped like dangerous weapons should all be banned, they are all far too realistic.

"this Belt buckle fiasco was totally unavoidable!" Is it really?

Hey MOM...why would you let your kiddos buy something like that? Who is in charge in your household?

I'd be pissed for the delay. How about those people that missed their planes? I'd want to know who had the belt so I could recover damages. It's not a fashion joke. I hope the authorities sent them a bill for the emergency services call.

meaning........................the parents should have overseen the packing of their kids! If they were not watching what they were putting in their suitcases...(i'm assuming they were older, only because of the type of buckle it was) it's the parents fault. We BOTH are in charge of our kids, 24/7. Like I said , Im not condoning what happened, and My son only has a sticker, I didn't say it was a fashion joke. I was just trying to shed some light on what the "item was"..........sorry I said anything.

Safety........................FULL STOP !

I worked onboard cruise ships for many years & the safety of passengers was THE BIG DEAL

We attend drills weekly, we have safety on our minds 24/7, we are trained to take charge of ever situation.

Ive been off the ships as a worker for 12yrs now but Im still alert to every emergency situation, I will always respond to fire alarms, cries for help & assist where I can.

If parents or adults travel with fake weapons they deserve to have the book thrown at them.......& take responsibility for their actions

I would have never thought in a million years that there was a new koddos fashion logo consisting of a "grenade".

its the same type of fashion logo that have some 13 year old girls waklking around with the words PORN STAR on there t-shirts.

Sorry but what are some parents thinking of when they lets there kids have the run of the place.
