To snorkel or not

One of our favorite things to do as we curise is to snorkel. I heard pros and cons about snorkeling on the island. Undertows and murky water don't work well with us. We would like a bar/restaurant within walking distance too. So, is it really worth it for us to drag our gear around as we tour the island in our rental car and then find a snorkeling spot somewhere? If so, where would be the best beach to snorkel and see what's beneath the sea?

We do not bother dragging our gear to the beach on St. Martin.
