What is this by QE2's mast?

Does anyone know what this "black box" between the penthouses is? I have never seen it before and was curious

The side by the Queen Mary suite has a cut out. I think it may facilitae access. It used to be both sides. However from the Queen Elizabeth Suite one cannot see it.

I believe what you are looking at is the black painted base of her main mast. It was much more evident before the deluxe suites were added to her during layup in New Jersey.

Look at post 4 in the links posted. You can see clearly that it is some sort of cut out.

 

What intrigues me is why on the Queen Elizabeth Suite side they fitted a metal panel, yet on the Queen Mary suite side they didn't.....
