Leaving in a week- Corner Brook?? Cancel excursion or keep it? What to do in port?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I need help with planning a day at Corner Brook. We will be leaving next Thursday on the NCL Dawn and have a shore excursion booked for a local lunch and music/story telling show (for lack of a better description). We have just read some unfavorable reviews of this excursion. I have searched for 2 months and cannot come up with any info regarding anything near the port/activities within walking distance. On this cruise we will have my parents (in their 50's and healthy) and our one year old baby. Generallly we would have toured Gros Mourne Park (ship tour is 7 hours!!!) or hiked but with the baby this may not be the best time to do that. Can anyone offer suggestions if there is anything to do close to the ship for a 2-3 hours or withn easy driving distance (which rental car company) or should we just keep the ship excursion? Any help is appreciated! Happy cruising...

DH and I are also in our 50's and not so healthy; however, we are opting out on a ship excursion and having lunch at Glynmill - a nice 20 min walk from port. We are able to access the Stream Trail from there. Good luck and have a great cruise!

I have been in the area twice, and both times I have gone to Gros Morne. While Corner Brook may be a pleasant small town, it pales in comparison with the beauty and splendor of Gros Morne. If your circumstances prevent you from joining the ship's shore excursion, if at all possible you should consider a private excursion.

If you have any interest whatsoever in geology, the Tablelands at Gros Morne are a must-see. The people in your party may not be up to the Tablelands trail but it is a nice way to see the landscape (the trail really is not very challenging, rather flat, and you can turn-around at any time). There is a boat tour that allows you to view the contrasting landscapes, and everyone in your party should be able to do that one. See http://www.troutriverpondboattour.com. A Parks Canada visitor center helps interpret the surroundings. All of these sights are on the south side of Bonne Bay.

Rocky Harbour is the main town within Gros Morne, but it does not have much itself but the main Parks Canada visitor centre. Nearby Norris Point does host the Bonne Bay Marine Station (see http://www.bonnebay.mun.ca). Many visitors enjoy the remarkable scenery of Western Brook Pond (see http://www.bontours.ca). All of these sights are on the north side of Bonne Bay.

A ferry connects the north and south sides of Bonne Bay. The ferry docks at Norris Point on the north side, and Woody Point on the south side (see http://www.bontours.ca).

Were you to arrange your own tour, you could consult with either or both of the taxi companies in the area. Both companies operate taxi and bus service to and from Corner Brook. On the south side, contact Martin's Transportation (see http://www.martinstrans.com), and on the north side contact Pittman's Taxi (709-458-2084).
