Progeso/Merida on your own

Now that Costa Maya is out until 2009 and ships are going to Progeso as an alternative can anyone help with ideas of doing Progeso and/or Merida on your own?

What is there to see? Do they have lots of people hanging around the port as other ports have wanting to help you with excursions? Taxi?

Read some of the older post on this thread by Hdawson. "H" has spent alot of time in the area and has some awesome pictures.

Thanks. I am pretty sure I have seen the pictures and read some of his/her posts.
