Cash on Board

Our Credit Union recently stopped accepting ANY ATM transactions from outside the country because of too much fraud. Fortunately our other bank has not done that yet, but if they do we may have to revert back to the old days of traveler's checks. :(

Funny you'd say the "old days of traveler's checks". Banking has changed so much. (Between the drive-thru and the ATM I bet I don't even go inside our bank 2 times a yr now, if that.) I used to be a teller, just a few years ago, and we did TCks all the time. The last time I went to get some at our bank maybe 2 or 3 years ago the teller had no idea how to do them. She didn't even have me sign them in front of her- I had to explain to her how they worked.

Ahoy!

I totally agree Rev. It's whatever your comforte level is. I usually bring $1000 in cash for a 10-14 dayer split up in various denominations that includes a $100 in singles for tipping the room service folks, baggage handlers, tour guides and bus drivers, etc. I keep the cash in a zippered bank bag ( I use another one for passports, tour vouchers, AL tickets, vacc cert, scuba cards, etc.)at the bottom of my carry-on along with a min. $500 worth of travelers checks (which nine times out of ten I bring home and put back in the checking account) to be used as emergency funds along with some pre-purchased foreign currency depending on the itinerary.

Once in the stateroom the 'dough' goes in the safe and I usually extract $100-150 (in USD or foreign) to take with me on port days for meals, entrance fees, libations, trinkets and such. If the love of my life wants jewlery, etc. I just slap it on a Visa or Amex.

I'm not much of a gambler although I will purchase a 'powerball' (lottery) ticket on occassion. Unfortunately I didn't hit the last drawing so my dreams of spending nine months cruising on the Prinsendam in Jan. evaporated (Grand SA, Grand Africa, the summer in the Med and Northern Europe and a crossing on one of the Cunards.)

May your next cruise be a GREAT CRUISE!

You can cash a maximum of $100 in travelers checks per day at the front desk OR you can get creative and buy some casino chips on your stateroom card ... go get a drink ... then CASH them in. No additional charge for buying the chips.
