Passed up two cat upgrade....was I stupid?

On our cruise on the Conquest last month, we had cabin #6395 (8A) and thought it was just perfect. Well, we booked the same cruise this morning, and could have gotten a Cat 10 for the same price, but I've heard and read that the motion is worse higher up, and was a bit concerned about the noise as well. The PVP said the cabins were identical, so I really saw no advantage. We got 6375 this time, 7 doors from our last. We liked 6395 so well, we thought if it's not broken, don't fix it. Just curious what you more experienced cruisers think.

Happy sailing,

Hmmmm. Maybe so. They just said it was "2 categories" so I assumed it was a 10 (never understood that category thing too well. Probably a newbie mistake on my part) :o They said it was on Deck 8 instead of 6.

I don't know what number it was, but the PVP said it was right below the Lido. That's why I was a bit concerned about noise. Other than a little while the night they had the Mardi Gras party in the casino, 6395 was very quiet. We never heard neighbors, loud music, anything. On the balcony or in the hall sometimes we could, but I was surprised how quiet it was.

There is no CAT 10 so I assume it was an upgrade to 8C.

What is the difference? More money for Carnival.

AAA gives me 2 cat upgrades free anyway so I normally book 2 cats below what I want and pay less.

At any rate you arent missing much and if you are happy where you are I say stay there.

Enjoy your cruise.

It sounds like you made the right decision to stay where you are, if you liked the cabin last time. :)

I have to say, though, that deck 8 is my favorite deck. One flight of stairs below the lido (never heard any noise, except when on the balcony you can hear the band on the lido, and sometimes the pool games, but it's very quiet most nights). I love just running up and down one flight to get something from my cabin that I forgot, or run up and grab a quick cup of coffee in the morning.

I would only take an upgrade if it sandwiched me between pax floors, or got me closer to a often used deck keeping me off the elevators.

I also like being one deck below the Lido deck. Not as much noise as I thought I might hear, and one flight up and I was where I needed to be.

I too passed on a 2 cat upgrade. I have a bl gty and was hoping for the same type upgrades they had last year (4 cat0 so I could get on the panorama. We loved that deck but can't see paying about $600 more for it. No room is a bad room so I guess we'll just ride it out and see what happens. I would be afraid of noise under the lido even tho people have had no problems. What about the buffett area and all that? Seems like it would be real noisy.

The only noise that I ever heard from the Lido (while in my cabin) was the sound of the tables/chairs being slid across the deck. This was always during the daytime. On most nights, the Lido is just deserted, unless of course they are having their big party up there (which we partake in, so the noise wasn't a problem).

I'd rather be on deck 8, under the Lido, than on another deck surrounded by the disco/casino/piano bar, which you most definately CAN hear.

I don't know if higher up is always better. We just sailed the Glory. We were on deck 8 right below Lido. It was very quiet, and had we not had a stroller we could have just ran up one flight to the Lido to eat or swim. That was probably the only benefit. We visited our friends who were on deck 1 and they had a huge cabin. They were outside with a large window. Their cabin was huge. There were 10 of us in in one evening and it was fine. Our inside cabin with 2 bunks down felt like a cave.

Thank you. I've said exactly the same thing in another thread and was a minority of one amongst a whole bunch of people who said to ignore my advice, they would never book that deck. I always do when I have the choice.

The upgrade was probably from a category 8A (balcony) to a category 8C (another balcony). The cabins are most probably identical, with location being the differentiating factor.

Don't sweat passing up this upgrade if you're happy with your present location.

I think if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're happy where you were, stay with it. Value is totally in the perception of the receiver. The upgrade may have been valuable to others but if it's not to you, it's not. That doesn't mean either perception is wrong, just different.

I actually prefer to select my cabin. Since I'm a past guest I usually qualify for a 2 cat upgrade so I book a 4A then usually select cabin 6294 or somewhere between the forward & midship elevators on the inside port side. I just find it easier to keep my orientation if my cabin is in the relatively same place all the time.

For my upcoming February cruise I was offered the Panorama deck for an upgrade but 1. didn't want to be up that high and 2. didn't want to be on a deck that didn't go all the way through without going outside.

I'm usually right above the casino and have never had any trouble with noise or odor.

I think you made a smart choice since you have had previous experience and were happy with your cabin choice. We were offered a 2 category upgrade on our upcoming cruises that I turned down as well. I'm like you I don't consider an upgrade two decks higher a desirable upgrade. The only way I'd consider chancing an upgrade to a higher deck would be if it were for a suite or a bigger balcony. Otherwise I'm perfectly happy staying midship :)

i don't think so.

if i were given a choice to change my paid for cabin assignment, and i already had a cabin sandwiched btwn 2 pax deck (not above or below public spaces), which was midship or aft, i wld not trade it for a cabin 2 decks higher where i wld lose that.

That's us too :D . Our last 3 cruises we have been just one deck below the Lido and 2 of them have been aft cabins.

We love that location - but for our next we have jumped in to the "9A, aft wrap" pool - and we ended up on deck 6 because we wanted a sofa in the room. I am figuring that the 9A - wrap will outweigh the convenience of one flight of steps. But we'll see  ......

The larger ships that we have cruised on have been the Liberty and we just got back on the Glory. On the Liberty we had cabin 8341 and loved it - just up one flight to the lido to the pool or buffet for drinks. We also had no noise from above and it was mid ship so it was easy to get both forward and aft. So when we booked the Glory although we could have upgraded to the Lido deck - since it was forward, we chose to stay with the Verandah deck and also cabin 8341 again. Our friends were on the Lido deck and realized why we liked the Verandah deck better. Hope that helps.

I passed up an upgrade from the lowest inside cabin to the highest inside cabin. They thought I was CRAZY for doing that, but like you said, the motion is worse the higher you stay. Since I can get sick pretty easily, we decided to just stay on the Riviera deck. Your PVP is right-- the room is the same... it's just your location that you're trading. If you are fine with walking the stairs and not being 10 ft away from the pool, then you shouldn't worry about it. Besides, the extra walking will help keep the extra pounds from stacking on from all that great food!!!

That's a negative if you ask me. Doing the stairs is a good portion of the exercise I got on the ship, so being on a lower deck was actually a benefit with all those extra calories I was consuming.

But if you have more self discipline than I do and spend a lot of time at the gym working out, then I guess being close would be a negative.

You all were right (as I'm sure you knew). I just checked out the Carnival website, and no Cat 10. I also noticed no Cat 7 or 9. Wonder who dreamed up that system anyway? Think they must have had a mite too much rum.:D Or maybe they couldn't count to 10!
