twofromcolumbus Posted October 24, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 24, 2007 Croydon Plantation - the Spirit of Jamaica is worth doing. The tour departed the Pier area at 9:00 am; The buses held 20 people; There were a total of 5 buses on this day. The drive took approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and it goes up into the mountains on a winding road; It is a scenic drive and also goes through a couple of villages, Cambridge being the largest. Proverty is seen as the homes and stores are little more than shacks. The road to the plantation is rough and dirt. The plantation is on a hilltop. Main items grown are pineapples, coffee, sugar cane, star fruit, bananas. You do get to sample the fruits. Very informative guides explain each section of the plantation. At the conclusion of the tour, they provide a wonderful lunch or Jerk Chicken, Plantains, and Rice and Beans; This is included in the cost of the tour which through Carnival was $59 per person. They do let you sample Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee and other beverages are for sale; Red Stripe Beer $3.00 or 2 for $5.00; Bottled water $1.00; Soft Drinks $2.00; They also sell the Blue Mountain Coffee, and also Honey and tee shirts. 1 pound of coffee was $26.00; You may get it cheaper at stores at the pier.... We departed the plantation around 2:20 pm and arrived back at the ship at around 3:30 pm; Al in all a nice day out in the countryside of Jamaica; Not stressful, although it was on the warm and muggy side; It is worth the cost of the tour and it beats hanging around the pier area......:) :)
