espmass Posted October 13, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 13, 2007 Just wanted to highly recommend the La Scala pizzeria on the Dawn Princess. They set this up in a common area and have green checked tables so it looks like a trattoria. The personal pizzas are made to order and are delicious. Great service too! They serve only pizza at lunch time but at dinner they serve pizza, Ceasar salads, lasagne, and two pasta dishes. We had lunch there twice and had dinner there once on our cruise a week ago. Toto2Kansas Posted October 13, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 13, 2007 I agree, it has always been our favorite alternate place for lunch and dinner on the Sun Class ships. A nice change of pace from the diningroom or buffet. And the food has always been wonderful, along with the service.

sueandkent Posted October 13, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 13, 2007 We are on the Dawn in 3 weeks and very much looking forward to trying this. DH is a huge pizza and pasta fan so this will be a treat for him. This is our first time on a Sun class ship so we're hoping we enjoy it.

espmass Posted October 14, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted October 14, 2007 They do not serve pizza at the pool grille like most ships do; only in La Scala. But you can go there in a swim suit with cover or in shorts.

marshabear Posted October 14, 2007 #8 Share Posted October 14, 2007 we were dissapointed at this place to eat...but for a different reason...they do not let you take the pizza out of the restaurant area...and DH loves to take pizza back to our cabin and they said "no"... he was so upset we never went back...in fact , we never stayed to eat that time...to some this may be petty, but he loves to eat pizza on a cruise ship- in the comfort of our cabin!! so just as an FYI, you must eat your pizza in the restaurant area... 2pbears Posted October 14, 2007 #9 Share Posted October 14, 2007 Is the Dawn the only Princess ship that has La Scala? We were so disappointed with the pizza on the Golden--didn't hold a candle to the Dawn's pizza.
Toto2Kansas Posted October 14, 2007 #10 Share Posted October 14, 2007 The Sun Class ships, which would be the Sea, Sun and Dawn Princess all have a type of sit down Italian Restaurant all located in the same place across from the casino. They go by different nameds depending on the ship. This is the only class of ship we have seen have these. The OLD Crown Princess and Regal had one upstairs that was a dedicated Italian 'Pizza" type restaurant, but the newer and larger ships have the pizza by the pool, which is totally different. Pizza by the pool you order by the slice and can take anywhere, the 'La Scala' type offerings do no allow this. But Princess is now having the $3 cabin delivery on some ships which I expect will spread to all of the ships in the fleet very soon.

How is the pizza different from any other princess ship? I didn't like the cracker like crust of the pizza on the golden.
espmass Posted October 14, 2007 Author #12 Share Posted October 14, 2007 The pizza on the Dawn was more like a real pizza than the cracker type on the Golden. A thicker crust, although not very thick, and much moister. Very good. They don't let you take the pizza out but they must deliver it through room service or something because each morning I saw lots of empty pizza boxes outside cabin doors. I never checked that because we only ate in the restaurant.
Toto2Kansas Posted October 14, 2007 #13 Share Posted October 14, 2007 How is the pizza different from any other princess ship? I didn't like the cracker like crust of the pizza on the golden. On the smaller ships, they make inidvidual pizzas. They are made to order and the crust is thicker, (I am sure you could order it even thicker if you requested it), you can request it have whatever toppings you like on it, extra cheese, a combination of items anyway you want it, etc. etc. We also aren't fond of the pizza served pool side as there is just nothing to it, crust wise, but on the Sun Class ships, it is totally different. vickie_bernie Posted October 14, 2007 #15 Share Posted October 14, 2007 The smell coming from the pizzaria was very inticing. We sucumbed to the pizza one afternoon. We didn't care for the Matre D there, he was little scattered and abrupt with some passengers. The service we got from the servers was great though. I loved my pizza, much better than the pizza places on the other ships that have the pizza place by the pool. Ok now I am hungry
NavySis Posted October 15, 2007 #16 Share Posted October 15, 2007 I would like to say the same thing. I just got off the Dawn today and I also highly recommend the La Scala pizzeria. The pizza and service were great. I wish I was still on the Dawn eating their great pizza.

Know you probably had a wonderful trip. Please share it with us. Doven, I will try to write a review for you. I had a great time and the ship is a great ship. I found my way around by the middle of the second day. Please feel free to ask me any questions and I will try to answer them. You are so lucky. It's back to the real world and work tomorrow for me. doven Posted October 15, 2007 #20 Share Posted October 15, 2007 Thanks Navy sis - hard to get back to the real world....we're really excited. Some guys have organized a roll call that has about 60 people signed up. That should make it more fun. What did you do in the ports and how was the nightly entertainment?? Warm enough on board to sit at the pool on the Dawn? I heard it was quite windy and hard to walk on the promenade deck.

The husband has to have the La Scala pizza for lunch everyday so we would order from room service: 2 pizzas and 1 chicken ceaser salad and then take them up to the pool and eat pizza and drink beers. YUM!

Warm enough on board to sit at the pool on the Dawn? I heard it was quite windy and hard to walk on the promenade deck. I did the lands end boat tour & seniic drive in cabo. The boat tour was great. I did highlights and flyers in Mat. I like the tour and flyers, but not Mat itself. I did the highlights tour in PV that was good also. All the excursions I took were very good. I liked all the shows onboard except Lorenzo Clark. I thought he was awful. Yes it is windy on the promenade deck. It was warm enough to sit by the pool when we were in Mexico, but it was a little chilly and windy for me on the sea days. I live in Phoenix so I like hot weather, but it should be warm enough. I will tell you that it was very humid when we were on port.
doven Posted October 16, 2007 #23 Share Posted October 16, 2007 Thanks Sis - we're doing to same tour in CABO, doing something in Mat with Mazatlan Frank and a jeep safari in PV. Being from Texas, we too enjoy the hot weather - I do not like to be cool and have really wondered if a bathing suit would even be necessary with the windy conditions.
