car rental drop off port of miami

Hi neighbor. We did just that in April of this year. We rented from Hertz ( which was a little more expensive than other companies) and it was so convenient. The Hertz office is a five minute drive from the port and they do have a free shuttle. They will pick you up from the port if you have a reservation. We rented a car on the way back and spent a day in south beach before we returned the car to FLL.

You can't actually drop off at the Port of Miami but any of the rentals will shuttle you from where you drop off. They all have pick up shuttles as well when you get off the ship to take you to their local office to pick up a car.

I second the Hertz recommendation. We just got off the FOS on Sunday. We flew into Ft. Lauderdale, and sailed out of Miami. I went with Hertz for the "before" trip...the car drop off was very close to the port in Miami, and the people that worked there were very nice. On the other hand, I rented from Alamo for the trip back, and what a mistake! It took them forever to get the shuttle bus to the cruise terminal (we watched quite a few Hertz vans pass by before we even saw the 1st Alamo shuttle), and we were shuttled all the way to the airport to pick up the car. And...it definately wasn't worth the trip..the interior of the car was disgusting!! It would have definately been worth the few extra bucks to go with Hertz afterwards.

I agree with the others, go with Hertz. We cruised in March. We flew into FLL a day early and picked up a Hertz car at the airport. We drove to Miami and had the car to get around for the day. We dropped it off the next morning (no charge to drop off at a different location by the way) and took their free five minute shuttle to the pier.

We did this, with Dollar Rent a Car and it worked out perfectly! We picked the car up in Ft. Lauderdale at the airport, drove to our hotel in Miami, dropped the car off the next day at their office close to the pier, and they shuttled us to pier.

I know that Thrifty/Dollar (same location) does shuttle, but Enterprise has stopped (at least as of a few months back. Be sure your company of choice does a free port shuttle, because, contrary to what others may say, they don't all do it.

Don't understand why the rentals make such a big deal of it in Miami, while in most ports its just automatic.

We didn't have the same luck with Hertz. We're currently onboard the FOS, and last Sunday we dropped the car off at Hertz at the Miami Airport (we had driver from Marco Island). The Hertz drop off for the Miami Airport area was off site, and they shuttled us over to the airport, but would not take us to the Port of Miami. We had to pay another $25 for cab fare.

Hertz has cars on site at the airport. You walk from the baggage claim to the Hertz counter then into the garage to get your car.

How are the drop off procedures at Fort Lauderdale airport? Does anyone recall how far from the AA check in the Hertz drop off is?

Which Hertz location is this on their website?

My guess is you selected the WRONG return location on your reservation - you should select an in-town Hertz Local Office, instead of the one at MIA.

When you search Hertz locations, you should be able to see the right location to use.

Mind you, most in-town offices of virtually all rental car companies close at noon on Sunday, with very very few exceptions. So there might be your problem - you could not return the car before noon, thus it defaults to Airport drop-off on your reservation - or you simply did not pay attention.

OOPS!!!! sorry everybody for the duplicate posts above. I was having trouble with my computer, didn't realize they were posting multiple times!!!! :o

Thanks juniorsmom!! Have you had experience dropping off at FLL ?

Yes, it was pretty easy. You drop the car off at the car rental building and there is an attendant to do the paperwork, you can then grab the shuttle bus and it will take you to your terminal building. No hassles
