Douro River -- Just back; exceeded expectations!

Here's a preliminary report: We've just returned from Uniworld's pre-cruise, week-long trip through Spain, followed by a week on the Douro Queen sailing up to the Spanish border and back to Porto, Portugal on the Douro River. The entire trip went off without a single glitch. Our tour-guide in Spain was Trafalgar's Isabell Vergara, as nice and knowledgeable a person you won't find anywhere. The Douro Queen is a 2-year old, immaculately-clean boat with an excellent, friendly crew. Yes, the rooms are small, as on any river cruise boat (you're only there to sleep and change clothes), and the beds "firm" (we like). Food ranged from good to excellent; many choices, so hard to find something you don't like. Two dinners were off the boat and outstanding. The excursions were very interesting and delightful. The Cruise Director is Heiner Schmidt, who has a PhD in history; he's a fun, interesting guy and added measurably to the experience. The scenery up and down the river is breath-takingly beautiful. We knew nothing of Portugal before, and are impressed with this beautiful country.

We whole-heartely recommend this trip, and will be happy to answer any specific questions -- email at captgeo@earthlink.net

Best wishes,
