Teen boys on formal night and other nights

Can you tell me how teen boys...17 and 14 generally dress on formal and regular nights? Would a shirt and tie be acceptable for them on formal nights and khakies and a polo shirt for the other nights? Thanks for your help. I don't want to buy clothes they really won' wear much again...and they are still growing!

I always rent tuxes for my two boys they look very handsome in them and we get our family portraits done that night.
