A CATEGORY two cyclone is still hovering over the Coral Sea but could reintensify in the next day or so, the Bureau of Meteorology said today.

Cyclone Guba, which had been rated as a category three yesterday, had weakened in the last 24 hours but could strengthen again, said meteorologist Ivor Blockly.

"It's got the potential to develop into a stronger system," Mr Blockly said.

At 11am (AEST), Guba was about 380km east north-east of Lockhart River on Cape York Peninsula and moving slowly south-west.

The cyclone was expected to continue to move slowly towards the coast over the next two days but at this stage, did not pose a threat.

No cyclone watch or warning was current but a pressure ridge has developed along the coast and was directing strong south-easterly winds between Cape Grenville and Cooktown, the bureau said.

The winds were likely to spread southwards to Bowen during tomorrow, with seas rising to three metres outside the Barrier Reef and to two metres inside the reef and in open waters.

Could make for interesting sailing as this is right in the middle of our passage to Singapore.
