Shopping in Mazatlan

I am interested in doing some local shopping in Mazatlan ? not fancy leathers and clothing, but local Mexican handicrafts and sampling local food treats. Is it better for me to spend time in Old Mazatlan or the Golden Zone for this? I have heard that the Golden Zone is the primary tourist shopping area - Are we talking upscale stores that are found in the US? What is basically the difference between the two areas? Thanks.

Right at the port there were loads of handicraft dealers. I don't remember about food though.
