JFK to LaGuardia

We are considering using frequent flier miles on a return from London and see that the only available is to fly LHR to JFK then transfer to LaGuardia. Has anyone done this and is there some sort of shuttle or bus that runs between these two airports? Doesn't sound easy...but wondering what advise is out there for us. Thanks

It would take you approximately 40 minutes to go to La Guardia from JFK. Keep in mind that La Guardia is a small airport with limited runways. If there is any kind of inclement weather the airport is the first to close. This is especially true in the winter months. You would have to decide if the inconvenience is worth the price it would save you for a requent flyer flight.

I have done it more than once. For two or more people, a taxi is easiest. Figure $30 or so and 45 minutes (often the taxi makes it in 20-30 minutes but don't count on it).

There is also a bus that runs regularly but I think it costs $10-$15/person so for two or more, the taxi makes the most sense if you don't have tons of luggage. Note to only use the official taxis outside the terminal, not touts who hang around inside.

The biggest bugaboo is if you have a lot of luggage - the airlines don't transfer bags between airports so you must pick up your luggage in JFK, bring it with you to La Guardia and recheck it. Not the end of the world but good to know in advance.

LGA & JFK may look close on a map, 12 miles as the crow flies, but that can be the longest 12 miles of your life.

I would allow a MINIMUM of 4 hours to make the transfer in your case. Here's why:

- you have to clear immingation at JFK

- you have to claim your luggage and clear customs at JFK

- you'll then have to make your way to LGA. This can be done via:

- taxi

- airtrain to Jamaica & then connecting via taxi/shuttle bus

- private car transfer

- shared shuttle bus between airports

- at LGA you'll then need to check in & reclear security

Also the Van Wyck Expressway can get really clogged up. You don't mention what time you'll be making this transfer, but from about 7AM-10PM the Van Wyck can be really slow going.

LGA is not that small and not handled much differently than JFK based on weather. I don't recall ever seeing JFK open and LGA closed due to weather. You may just run into different delays, but the wearther doesn't close one over the other. Have to also disagree about it being the "first to close". That's probably a better description of ISP which is out east on Long Island and a much smaller airport with very very limited runways. LGA is a major airport for NY and not considered "small" by any means.

I would agree however with the other posters, that a transfer between the two is not very convenient and definitely can be a hassle based on number of bags and weather. Just dealing with traffic is a pain in and of itself.
