I did something about the fuel surcharge

I honestly can't help but laugh at all the hoopla about an extra $5/day per passenger. Have you not been seeing the change at the pumps at in your home fuel costs?

 

If the extra $ is going to break the bank, then you probably can't afford to be cruising.

 

Pay it and enjoy your cruise..... Geesh:rolleyes:

Perhaps you just don't get THE POINT. The "hoopla" is NOT about the fuel surcharge, but about the fact that it was applied retroactively and Carnival changed their contract specifically so they could do that. It's just wrong. Perhaps they will get away with it (to Americans anyway), but I don't think we've heard the end of this. IMHO this collassal error in judgement is going to come back and bite Carnival in the butt...

It is not about the $5pp fuel surcharge at all.. as mentioned it is about the way it was added to cruises already booked or paid in full.. If it was me I would be furious as well.. Canadians (like me are lucking out if you booked before Nov 7th because our Country has a law against it.. so yes we are exempt for those cruises booked before that date.) Just wish Carnival would drop it for all pre booked or paid in full cruisers..

Not all have the bogus surcharge, not all implemented it retroactively to existing bookings as Carnival has done, and not all have added contract language that requires the customer to sign a blank check when they book.

 

AFAIK, there is nothing stopping Carnival from adding a SECOND fuel surcharge to the "already booked and/or paid for" US pax, in order to make up for the lost add'l revenue from the Canadian pax, since they were able to get out of it..

Thanks, we whiners will now modify our own tolerance levels for unethical practices to fit your personal definition, and then take our further discussions to a thread that you are not required to read.

I'm in complete agreement with you on the whole retroactive thing and the contract language (yes, I've come to change my mind as I learned more about it), but why do you consider the surcharge bogus? The fact that it's a surcharge and should be included in the fare, or the fact they're charging it at all. I really don't blame them for doing it; I just think they should have handled it better.

The fuel to propel the ship and generate the ship's electricity is a necessary and inseparable component of the labor & materials needed to provide the agreed product/service. Dan Gross at slate.com explains it better than I can:

"In most other industries, when the cost of a key input rises (or falls) to a new level and stays there for awhile, the base price of the end product adjusts...Fundamentally, they're imposing the surcharges instead of raising prices and are hoping customers are too dim to notice."

You sound like a European that is so conditioned to accept socialism that you never challenge any harsh rule or government change of law. It seems clear that when you are used to depending on whatever handout the nanny state gives you, it gets ever harder to protest the new arrangements that come along.

No, I am not European (my family has been in New England since 1640:D ), although I do like to travel to Europe and recently went to visit my daughter who lives in Italy. When you travel outside the US, you come to realize that many people do not look fondly on "spoiled" Americans. This thread just goes to show the attidues of some Americans, unfortunatley those are the ones that give us ALL a bad rep.

 

I still say, suck it up and pay it........or cancel. Let your actions speak for you. If you don't like it, don't go!

You really need to get a life! C'mon is it such a hardship to pay the fuel charge? Who are you really hurting by cancelling your cruises? And where are you going to vacation that won't be adversly effected by the increased costs of fuel?

This is about breach of contract. It's wrong. Probably we're stuck with it or cancel. But it's not okay. At least not to me. And Americans that believe that wrong is wrong are not "spoiled", they're just right. The Americans that speak up against wrong give us a good rep. The ones that don't are not Americans. It's what we do. Check history.

Can't cancel, plane reservations are non-refundable. Airlines told me that up front. The cruise line did not tell me up front, hence this thread about unilateral change of contract after the fact. I challenge you to point out the attitudes on this thread that you say are "unreasonable Americans"and we can debate them. I sense a quick, decisive debate victory on my part.

If I could interupt for a second. I just got off the phone with my rep. at Carnival and they said that Any Canadian would get their surcharge back if they had already booked before Nov 7th. You just have to call. I think maybe its time the American Gov put some consumer protection laws into effect like we have here in Canada. Then this would not be an issue. Carnival is only doing what the laws allow. If you do not like the laws, then you should get them changed... But that is just my 2cents worth. Sorry for the rant.

I unfortunately paid it, very reluctantly though. My GF REALLY wanted to go, and I couldn't tell her no. I couldn't break her heart.

 

I tried to tell the people at Carnival my side of the story, and after getting passed up the supervisor chain of command, was met with 3 options; cancel, pay it, or call the CEO.

.

 

I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't have gotten through to the CEO, but if you did, that would have been darn cool. Just like the airlines, once one line makes this change, everyone jumps onboard. This is a fee that will never go away regardless of what happens with gas prices, since 9/11 there have been about 4 of these surcharges added to airline tickets, none of them have gone away.
