Any Public Transporation in St. Thomas?

I don't remember seeing any public transportation however we set up a tour with a gentlemen named Godfry who was awesome. He has a truck with benches across the back like a safari truck. He picks you up from the ship and takes you shopping (tells you where deals really are rather then the cruise lines line of garbage). Then he takes you on a tour of the island which is great pointing out things etc. After the tour he lets you select one of three beaches to be dropped at for a few hours and then picks you back up and takes you back to the ship. We set this up independently which save you at least 50%. Anything you book thru the ship costs an arm and a leg due to the fact that they make a commission. You will find that the stores they send you to are associated with the cruise ships and make a commission on everything so ultimatley you want to stay away from their recommendations. Took a couple of cruises to figure out but we did.

Bottom line is jump on the internet and set things up independently. I highly recommend Godfry. It is $20/person and you don't pay until the end of the day. www.godfreytours.com

Yes there is a public bus system, reliabile is not one of its characteristics. There is also the 'dollar ride' which serves as a form of public transporation but is not regulated like a bus typically is (no fixed schedules, vehicles aren't labeled and so on). Neither provides access island-wide, they stick to popular areas residents work/live. Taxis are the best option. You can also rent a car.

What are your plans for the day, then folks can suggest transportation options for those plans.

A taxi from Havensight to downtown is $4 per person, one way. Not sure if they would charge extra to go to the Synagogue, which is located downtown but not quite in the main area the taxis typically drop people. The road to the Synagogue is a narrow, one way road. Be sure to tell the taxi dispatcher and the driver that you want to go to the Synagogue before actually getting in the taxi and heading on your way. Mentioning this because some of the larger taxi vehicles might have a hard time navigating the narrow road.

On our second trip to St. Thomas, we opted to enjoy Sapphire Beach on our own and shop Havensight at the pier. Despite what everyone at the pier will tell you (and there will lie to you), you can get local transportation for $2 per person in an open-air taxi to Sapphire Beach. Simply walk out of the Havensight pier main gate, cross the street, turn left and walk until you get to the Bus Stop (there is a pullover area) across from K-Mart and cross the street so that you are standing on the K-Mart side of the street. It is a leisurely 10 to 15-minute level walk. When you see an open-air taxi drive up, flag him down, tell him where you wish to go and enjoy the trip. The drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way to Sapphire Beach depending upon traffic. Pay upon exiting the taxi.

Also see my post 10 or so below entitled "cheap transportation" and bump it up to the top by posting, if you will. WE TOO were lied to regarding public transportation.

Used the bus and it was great. Very much on time. Very friendly local people. Great driver. Highly recommended for $ 2!
