Shore excursions

I am going on the Legend October 6th. I am interested in visiting St. John, should I book an excursion or get there on my own?

I am also going to Tortola, what do you recommend?

We have a 8 month old travelling with us.

As far as St John, it would be very hard to do it yourself. You take a ferry from St Thomas and then a small bus around the island. It was worth seeing but I think it would be really hard trying to figure it all out yourself especially with a 8 month old.
