Earthquake North Island, NZ

Thought those frequenting this thread might be interested in this report:

 

From what I can see, there was a 6.8 quake centered 50 Km offshore with a lot of damage to Gisborne (Bay of Plenty area) on east coast of the North Island. Some injuries, no deaths reported. Hospital in good condition but much damage to utilities (water, electricity, etc.) and to the main road. Thus far, no anticipation of a Tsunami. for more info, suggest you Google it. No cause for alarm, just an FYI.

It was headline news today on the radio. Apparently the residents of Gisborne were lucky even though it was big quake. Our hearts go out to all those New Zealanders whose homes have been affected. What a terrible time right on Christmas.

Extensive minor property damage occurred and a couple of buildings in the CBD were damaged, with parts falling down. It must be very disheartening for the people affected, and my sympathies go to them.

 

However, it could have been far worse. Civil Defence appears to have acted with commendable speed and temporary overnight accommodation was found for those whose homes sustained damage.

 

There were no serious injuries to people. Only one death, due to an elderly person having a heart attack during the quake.
