chrob Posted September 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2004 Which is the best tour company to go with to see bears on Kodiak Island? We will be based in Anchorage.
Yukon Posted September 13, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2004 I'd say that Afognak Lodge gets the most attention in the reviews I've seen, and all of them have been positive - http://www.afognaklodge.com . Here's a list of all 5 local operators, though - http://kodiakisland.net/bear.html Murray
chrob Posted September 13, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted September 13, 2004 Thank you for the reply but all these tour companies seem to include fishing included the bear viewing trip. We were really only looking for a day trip from Anchorige. Is this possible? Maybe we are looking at the wrong place. We will in Anchorige from approx. 7th-12th August and want to see the grizzlies with salmon. What would you advise?
Yukon Posted September 14, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 14, 2004 >>...all these tour companies seem to include fishing included the bear viewing trip.<< Afognak Lodge doesn't. But a day trip does seem to be discouraged but most of them.
Budget Queen Posted September 14, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 14, 2004 Day trips to Kodiak isn't a good idea. Not enough time. For any bear watching- browns eating salmon, Katmai, Brooks Falls, Hallo Bay etc. overnights are better so to offer more opportunity for viewing- it isn't a zoo and a day tour- runs about $500pp is a very costly option if you don't see bears. Rust's out of Anchorage runs bear tours.

Budget Queen Posted September 16, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2004 Then any of them. But as a thought- I would never stay in Anchorage all that time. Alaska is best seen on the move with a couple nights in each location. Alaska isn't a "day trip" touring area for the most part.
