Ship to Dublin city center

Recommended Posts

We'd like to do the HOHO bus on our own - do the ships provide a free/low cost shuttle into town (we'll be on Constellation). If not, approx. taxi fare?

I would post this on your cruiseline board as you are apt to get a quicher reply or call the cruisline. The HOHO bus is a great way to see Dublin BTW.Enjoy.

We were there on the Constellation in September. After learning from previous ports that X charged $10 or 12 to get to each city from the port, and public transportation was available nearby for a fraction of that, we decided to walk outside the port and look for a bus or even a taxi. We were enroute to the HOHO bus stop downtown. There were six of us. Well, this is one port where it wasn't so easy! We made it, with several stops for directions (passersby are extremely helpful in Dublin!) but it took about an hour and we ended up walking all the way to downtown. Maybe there's a bus somewhere, but we didn't find it.

We taxied back in the afternoon, needless to say. The port is confusing--we had trouble getting out on foot and the taxi driver had trouble finding the right place upon return...luckily my husband has a great memory for landmarks and directed him to the ship (after several u-turns.) Hope this helps.

Our P&O cruise on Oceana last year stopped at Dublin. P&O did not charge for shuttles at any time, but on my 1 Celebrity and many RCCL cruises we have always been charged for shuttles.

At Dublin it is a LONG walk to even clear the dock area.

Princess charges $5 for a one way bus trip to the center of Dublin and the HOHO bus picks you up around the corner. It was a great way to see the sights and to get around with having to walking great hugh distances in between things. We really enjoyed our day in the city! GD still talks about 'the tart with the cart'

I would echo what others have said about getting out of the port--it is one very large area. We took the Princess shuttle to downtown Dublin. We did the HOHO bus and actually did it twice to see everything. We went to the Trinity Library and Book of Kells at the end of the day and there was no line. In the morning there was a long line waiting to get in. Seems like there are a lot of great places to eat in the Temple Bar area (the HOHO bus does go in this area). We just walked along the street at lunch time looking at menus until we found a place we liked. In our walk we also came across the Molly Malone statute. At the end of the day the lines were VERY long for the return shuttles (this was on Princess) and the ship was delayed leaving because they had to wait for everyone to get back. They even stopped some buses that had taken people on tours that were returning to the ship to see if they had any extra seats for those of us waiting for the shuttles. I guess we could have taken a cab but we didn't mind spending a few extra minutes in Dublin talking to people in line. If you want to visit the Guiness Brewery, the HOHO bus will drop you off there.
