myurick Posted September 13, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2004 I'm sailing to Nassau in January. I just want to go the beach for a few hours and then head to the straw market. Which beach would be the best for me to go to? And what is the best way to get there? Thanks, Mike
Rare mskaufman Posted September 14, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2004 Go to Cabbage Beach. Just flag a cab when you get off the ship.
Kellyann Posted September 19, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 19, 2004 Unless something positive happened with Cabbage Beach since Friday, do not go there. The water and sand are beautiful there but there is nothing else. We took a cab driver's advice and 10 of us went there on Friday 9/17 and we ended up having to hail a cab to go somewhere else. I had planned on going to Cable Beach but made the mistake of listening to the driver tell us about Cabbage Beach. I figured it wouldn't be bad because I thought the Sheraton is there and we can use their facilities and get food and drinks. What he neglected to tell us was that the Sheraton has been closed for about 2 months for renovations; therefore, there are no bathrooms, places to get drinks or food and you had to climb down a very steep 10 foot embankment to get on the beach. They wanted $20 to rent an umbrella and $10 to rent a chair...that is pricey. DO NOT GO TO CABBAGE BEACH on Paradise Island until you are sure the Sheraton has been reopened and they permit you to use their facilities. Go to Bay Street (about 1 block from cruise ship dock) and take the jitney for $1 to Cable Beach. It is clean, air conditioned and safe and drops you off in front of the Wyndham Hotel. It's about 5 miles from dock and takes about 10 minutes to get there and 25 minutes in traffic. The Wyndham has beautiful bathrooms, a reasonably priced deli and we used their chairs and umbrellas all day at no charge. Some in the group gambled in their huge casino. The beach and water was warm and fairly clear. There was quite a bit of seaweed because of the storms but we had a fantastic and cheap day. The taxi fare is about $5 per person each way and takes the same route as the $1 jitney. We taxied over there because we had to get there from Paradise Island but the next time we go, we'll take the jitney. On the return we got dropped off at Bay Street and shopped for an hour or so. Where did you go on Cable Beach? scubagirrl, Is the jitney safe to take for my 12-year-old daughter and me? How do you get the jitney to go back into town? How often does it run? scubagirrl Posted October 22, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 22, 2004 Jitneys are perfectly safe for travel. I travel as a single women all the time and never have a problem. The #10 jitney will be downtown near the docks to take you to either the Radisson, Wyndham or Nassau Beach Hotel. To return, just go out to the street in front of any of these hotels and flag the #10 bus down. Just put up you arm as they approach. They come by every 3-5 minutes. Until about 6pm. cruislovin Posted October 22, 2004 #7 Share Posted October 22, 2004 Thanks so much, scubagirrl. How long will the ride take in each direction? Do they return downtown to the same location where you get on it? Is Nassau Beach also a hotel? What amenities does it offer?
scubagirrl Posted October 22, 2004 #8 Share Posted October 22, 2004 The trip should take about 15 mins going to Cable Beach, and about 10 minutes to return, depending on traffic. Around 3pm (school buses) and 5-6 pm (work commute) you should expect 20-25 minutes to return to downtown. They will return you to the same spot you got on. Nassau Beach Hotel is connected to the Wyndham by a pathway. They have a great beach, 2 small pools, daiquiri bar and a small burger grill. Chaises and palapas (no umbrellas on the beach) But there is some shady areas on the beach. This is actually one of my favorite spots.. Much quieter, and less kids running around. cruzrus2 Posted October 27, 2004 #9 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Does Nassau Beach or Cable Beach have wave runners to rent? Can the public walk onto these beaches or do cruisers have to pay a fee to use the beach? Are these the best beaches in Nassau? On one cruise we went over to Atlantis and were not allowed to walk out by the pool. Is there public beach access over there at all?

Buckeyefan Posted February 15, 2005 #11 Share Posted February 15, 2005 Okay - let me get this straight. If we go to the Nassau Beach Hotel for their beach, can we use their pools also? Is there a charge? We are looking for a place to go for a couple of hours and we have 3 children and didn't want the expense of Atlantis. Does this seem to be a good option? DO NOT GO TO CABBAGE BEACH on Paradise Island until you are sure the Sheraton has been reopened and they permit you to use their facilities.. The RIU hotel took over the Sheraton and will not be open to the public for bathrooms, drinks or food since it is all inclusive and you need to be a guest to use the facilities. As a matter of fact, rumour has it that RUI will be taken over by Atlantis eventually, and then you will not be able to even go near the facility. Atlantis will eventually make it impossible to enjoy Paradise Island without paying a hefty Pricetag. Cable Beach is a good alternative.
