MEXICO CITY : Hurricane Javier, a strong Category Four system, was heading toward the Mexican peninsula of Baja California, though the country's entire west coast was on alert for heavy rain, officials said.

Packing winds of 225 kilometers (140 miles) per hour, the storm's leading rainbands were already making themselves felt in Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit states, the weather service said at 1300 GMT. The hurricane was moving to the northwest at 15 kilometers (nine miles) per hour.

Civil defense authorities urged Mexicans to follow the news for up-to-date alerts and urged extra caution for boaters.

Hurricane Javier leftovers could rain on Arizona tonight

Sept. 18, 2004 12:00 AM

Umbrellas may come in handy for fans heading to Sun Devil Stadium today for the 7 p.m. football match-up between Arizona State University and Iowa.

Forecasters predict a good chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight because of a cool low-pressure system being shoved north into the state by Hurricane Javier, now off the western coast of Baja California and working its way toward Arizona.

It will be partly sunny this morning, and then become mostly cloudy in the afternoon before the expected onset of possibly heavy local rains by tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The diminishing storm could bring winds of 39 mph and higher in Arizona by Sunday afternoon, along with lower temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. Warmer and drier weather is expected Tuesday through Friday.

Weather update for Arizona...Yes, we did get quite a storm this evening over here in Sunny Arizona. I am sure that it was nothing like Javier, but it was still a pretty big storm for us. Just thought I would share.
