nkbrkr6 Posted January 14, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2008 Do the Ports along the Amazon accept US dollars? Other than Boca De Valaria (sp)?
Youngercruisers Posted February 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2008 I have been told by several people now, that you will need to get local currency - Brazil real (1 Brazil real = 0.583533 U.S. dollars) and in small denominations. The towns along the amazon, will not accept anything but local currency and have exact money as you won't get change back! Also as we have been looking further into jungle lodges prior to our cruise, you are going to find that almost all places (excluding Manaus) will only take cash, not CC.:o
islandwoman Posted February 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Are there ATM's near the cruise docks? If not, where is the best place to get Brazilian currency?
luvnorway Posted October 19, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 19, 2008 I'd appreciate it if anyone who has cruised the Amazon in 2008 could update this thread.
dfb Posted October 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 20, 2008 We cruised up and down the Amazon River this February 2008 and as I recall we used US Dollars almost everywhere, from vendors to tour operators to H Stern without any problems at all. It is true that they will only be able to give change in local currency, so either be prepared for that or carry lots of small bills for exact amounts. dfb Posted October 20, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 20, 2008 Are there ATM's near the cruise docks? If not, where is the best place to get Brazilian currency? In Feb. 2008, there was definitely an ATM inside the Manaus Cruise Passenger Terminal building.

luvnorway Posted October 21, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 21, 2008 Just read this on HAL captain's blog (see other post for link)and thought it might be useful info for anyone planning an imminent Amazon cruise. He is currently in Manaus and stated " Shopping is very good over here, especially if you venture a little bit away from the main streets. A most peculiar thing that I just heard, while writing this blog, was the fact that the locals have starting to refuse dollars. It seems that the dollar is not that strong anymore and local currency or Euros’ is preferred. As you can see, the turbulence of the money markets has also reached Manaus"
