Why do you people do this?

I disagree. :( On my cruise 2 weeks ago on Carnival Freedom, on those nights it said right in the Carnival Capers "Tonight is Formal Night". :D

You can disagree all you like, I have the Capers from Thursday, January 10/08 right in front of me, and it specifically says "Formal is the recommended attire for this evening's meal".

They can call it formal night" based on what the dress code is in the dining room, but nowhere do they even request that guests dress formally outside of the dining room... I've also heard it referred to as "lobster night" because lobster is served for dinner, but that doesn't mean that lobster continues to be served all night in the theater, the casino or the disco...

After all these years, I still can't understand why some people are so put out by the way others dress. There are choices available for those who choose to not dress in formal attire, and those choices are there for a reason. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO GET DRESSED UP!!!!

 The Lobster is not always served on Formal Dinner night, believe it or not. There was big talk last a couple cruises back about why on earth RCI was serving Fried Chicken on formal night and the lobster and Prime Rib were served on another night. I believe it was on our Grandeur Cruise. Now that was not well thought out.

The OP sounds way too uptight about this. She should be glad she looks so much "better" than everyone else. She can have all of the attention, and if she looks nice, people will tell her so. Some people also spend most of their time away from home in dressier clothes and heel, so they welcome the chance to not have to spend their week that way.

So if that were the case.....the people who choose to eat in the buffet have to dress formally also:confused: Or do they go back after dinner and put their formal clothes on so they can walk around the ship with the other formally dressed people:rolleyes:

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

I have nothing constructive to add other than this comment was hilarious :)

I agree. I spend M-F in dress clothes and heels, so it's nice to be comfortable. Granted, I dress up to go out, but that's dressy jeans and a cute top and heels. When you're on vacation, you're more relaxed and shouldn't have to stay dressed up if you don't want to.

And, to state the obvious, everyone around us on the cruise paid to be on that cruise just like we did (as far as we know). If they want to throw on jeans and flip flops after dinner, that's their right. If they want to leave their formal on all night, that's their right too. Heck, if they want to wear their formal all week, totally fine by me. In fact, you might make some new friends that way!

Excuse me for butting in but I'm just cruising the boards looking for stuff relevent to my march cruise and came upon this thread... so two cents worth

I love to wear my tux on formal nights. I wear a coat and tie on the other nights. My wife buys new formal wear every year (we cruise about once a year) so it's kind of special for her also. I love to see what others are wearing too. Sorry for being sexest but there is nothing sweeter than a woman dressed to the nines. My lovely wife included!!!;) I just think it's fun to wear a tux and go to the casino. I feel like James Bond! (only with 5$ chips) So come on ladies help an old guy enjoy his cruise and dress up.:)

Phil >can't wait for March 14 on the Miracle!

I love to cruise and also to the formal nights. I even enjoy the slightly more formal cruise mates on other lines. Dinner and the atmosphere are my favorite part of cruising. I find Carnival however to be the best for me. They really are fun ships!

I would offer my two cents to those who comment that they like the relaxed dress and a relaxing vacation. To me cruising is NOT a relaxing vacation. There are set times for many things. You have specific times to be back on the ship and they are almost always before the port really gets fun!

I just wanted to add that for relaxation an all-inclusive week is much more on the spot! A week on the beach in Mexico with no schedule at all is paradise. That said I do love cruising so I try to do both.

Cheers!

That is a good point, about the schedules, but a cruise is a vacation. If you're not relaxed on vacation, when are you relaxed? :) (Not YOU, per se, just in general, LOL)

It is wonderful that you feel inclined to do this....On a Cruise you should not feel like you should do something you don't want to do. I like your attitude. I promise that I won't tell you "You're overdressed" if you won't tell me I'm "Underdressed".

I can't wait until this whole formal night mess is changed to no formal nights because obviously most of us don't feel like dressing up and lugging around formal attire and such. Plus its such a big debate on message boards that the cruiselines or at least Carnival need to just get rid of it altogether.

I think it's all a matter of perspective. I think cruising is relaxing. Our last vacation we were on the road for 10 days and I logged 3000+ miles on the car. We had a certain distance to drive each day to make it to the hotels we had reserved. We also saw more wrecks than ever before with at least 3 fatalities, hours of backups, sunshine, rain so hard you couldn't see 30 feet, sleet and even a bit of snow. The most relaxing was when we stayed in one place for 5 nights. On the cruise, I don't have to worry about driving, weather (if it's bad I don't care, I'm not the one driving!), I only have to log feet instead of miles to get to my bed, if I miss dinner I can go to the lido deck at any time and get something to eat (don't have to drive around to find an open restaurant), when I leave the ship someone is going to take me where I want to go and make sure I get back on time! There is so little stress and responsibility here it's not funny! And as for a week on a beach, well that would just drive me nuts! :D I couldn't sit still for that long and I burn badly anyway so really, it would not be relaxing! Everyone is different. Even that driving vacation as stressful as it was at times, was relaxing compared to my daily work life!

Why, after so many people say they LOVE dressing up for formal nights, does everyone change back into their regular clothes as SOON as they are done with dinner, like it's a race or something? I personally like to enjoy the rest of my evening in my pretty clothes, and I don't feel like changing that many times a day. Hubby thinks otherwise, but I force him. Needless to say, I feel out of place because everyone else is so casual and we're walking around formal. Would it really kill you to wear a dress or suit for a few more hours? Modern society is just not classy anymore like it was back in the day!! People then would dress formally all the time, especially on a cruise, and now it seems to kill people after about 2 hours tops! Opinions?

Because you are sailing with the Walmart:) of the Seas.

Welcome to Walmart:)

Hubby gets forced

If there was something I hated or felt forced to do, I wouldn't do it!

Does hubby have that option

LOL.... Is hubby happy when he is forced to cruise all dressed up ? Let hubby be happy too... :D

Here's how the "mememes" think:

1. I want something.

2. I will convince myself that everyone else wants it, too.

3. I will scream, call names, insult people, twist words around, play dumb, bully and postulate freakishly-extreme and illogical scenarios in an attempt to justify my inane viewpoint.

4. I will post a gazillion times until I get my way.

5. Anyone who disagrees with me is a great big giant poopyhead.
