What to do in Freeport??

jerseygirl, we were in Freeport several years ago. DH and I got off the ship with our swimsuits on and clothes over top, not knowing for sure where we were heading. LOL!!

There was a van there with a sign TO THE BEACH and we just hopped in! We were taken to an area where there was several huts for shopping, necklaces/beachwear,etc and walked through I believe the grounds of the Sheraton and to the beach. The beach there was beautiful. White, soft sand and beautiful turquoise water. My pictures from there are some of the best from our cruise. We stayed for about three hours and walked back the same way and jumped back in a van and went back to the ship. Very easy to do but I do believe the van was $10 pp/each way. It was worth it though. Enjoy your time in Freeport. :)

That sounds like Our Lucaya beach, shopping across the street, that is where we are headed too. But there isnt a lot of information about Freeport I looked too. When I return from our sping break, I will make sure to post something here for future seekers about our experience.

Freeport is the downtown area of Grand Bahama. Our Lucaya is the Sheraton/Westin complex that is located in Port Lucaya. Port Lucaya is where beaches, shopping, restaurants and the casino are located. This is where you want to go! Freeport is where the International Bazaar and the old Princess/Royal Oasis complex is located. The hotel has new owners but won't open for quite awhile so the International Bazaar is pretty desolate. There are certainly many other wonderful places on Grand Bahama but considering you're time is limited I would head to Port Lucaya.

If you are a little adventurous, this is a great way to spend your day! We planned this ahead of time and everyone in our group agrees that it was one of our best days on a cruise ever! We are sad that we aren't going back this year; we go to Nassau instead.

We were just there last week......

In Freeport, take a van taxi..look for Freddy (Ready Freddy in blue van) nice guy and came back for us when we asked him to. We went to the LaCaya Sheraton..about 6-8 miles away. Went down to the pool area and to the right in a "hut" called Billy Joes (on the water) is some great conch

food. We had the fritters and the cracked conch and saw someone eating the grilled conch. It looked very good. We enjoyed the place...very small deck and bar stools at the counter. For less than $20 we had a great treat. Left there and went over to the LaCaya shopping area to fine Run Runners. after stopping in the casino...made $123 there. Leaving the casino, walk to the right and cross over to the shopping area. Ask for directions to Rum Runners for the frozen mango drink and $10 lobster. I felt a little guilty getting the lobster because it was lobster night on board, but it was superb! We were back at the ship in plenty of time, made some money and saw quite a bit of the island.

In Nassau we took the city bus, #21, all around just to see area that you would not normally see...some very poverty stricken areas....then changed to the #10 bus out to Cable Beach. Very nice area. You can get off anywhere, just tell the driver and Pay the dollar! We enjoyed seeing the beautiful homes along the waterfront. Much different area than before. Nice casino there, also.

This is kinda long, but just letting you know there are ways to see things and not spend so much. In the building next to the pier is a gal that sells angel ornaments from shells...on the side closest to the ships. I have given these as gifts and people just love them. They are a beautiful pink, made from the conch shell.
