The Aloha Spirit

I was thinking of a way to thank Emi, Sue, Spleen and all the other contributors to this board.

It was its beauty that brought me to Hawaii the first time. I think the beauty of its people is what is bringing me back again. What can we do to encourage them to continue to share their experiences? How about as a way of saying thank you, we share our experiences of the beauty of the Hawaiian people? I believe we all have a few experiences to share.

We were at Ma’s in Lihue ordering breakfast. Great place! We had eaten a shredded pork dish the night before and loved it, but could not remember its name. A gentleman at the table next to ours gave us the name of the pork dish. We started up a conversation with him. He was a cook at a nearby restaurant and comes in here frequently. We placed our order, which included the pork dish and also had papaya with lemon. Can’t get that here in the Midwest! As we were eating we asked this gentleman if he knew of a place where we could order flowers to take home with us. He didn’t, but gave some suggestions. Midway through our breakfast, Ma comes over and says she has a florist on the phone. She had overheard our conversation, looked up the florist’s number and placed the call for us. We couldn’t arrange a meeting with this florist, so she came down the mountain and left a brochure at our hotel. We placed an order that was delivered (treated and package for the Agriculture inspection) the morning of our departure. They all made this a very pleasant experience. All of them showed the Aloha Spirit!

Wow! How sweet and it made me cry...

I love it here. I was born in Japan, grew up in Southern California, moved to Washington State when my son was a baby and lived on the coast for awhile and then in Spokane for many years...and then moved to Hawaii. All those places never felt like home until I came here. I moved to Oregon for 10 months a couple of years ago and experienced something I never had before, homesickness for Hawaii. So, now I'm back home.

Thank you very much for your Aloha...

I agree...while I am not a local but a temporary transplant, I can definitely see the Aloha spirit everywhere here.

I am really glad you shared the story with us. Spleen, Emi and I (among others) have a labor of love here with the boards and hope everyone can have experiences like yours!

A classy resort

I called the Princeville resort to make dinner reservations. The lady asked for my first and last name. We started chatting and she asked for my wife’s name. She then asked if we were having any special occasion on the island during our stay. I said our 25th wedding anniversary. It all seemed quite innocent at the time.

We arrived at the resort and valet parked the car. Two attendants raced out to our car. One opened my wife’s door and then got into the car. The second one opened my door, handed me my receipt and then got in. They both closed and latched the convertible top on the car. We then went in to dinner. We were met by the hostess and was told it was going to be a little while and offered us a drink. A little while later a man discreetly asked if I would like champagne with the meal. I told him that it would be okay. Moments later we were escorted to our table. The bottle of champagne was chilling. Our waitress then seated and placed the napkin on my wife. Handed her the days menu which had no prices on it. Then she gave me a napkin and the menu with prices. As I glanced at the menu, I notice that it had my name and the fact that we were celebrating our 25Th printed on the menu. The waitress said it was a little souvenir for each of us. The whole evening was very special. After dinner we went our to get our car. Again two attendants raced to our car, folded down the top and turned on the AC full blast. This type of service was first class all the way.

I've stayed at the Princeville Resort before and agree that it's a classy resort and is one of my faves. But I have to say that your story has definitely put a new light on the service there ... amazing!
