My wife and I are taking our first ever cruise in March 08. We are embarking from Mexico calling at Nicaragua / Costa Rica and then through the Panama Canal and around the carribean. Whilst our expenditure on board is atken care of, what currency should we have for off the ship excursions aer Amercan Dollars suitable everywwhere or should we get the local currency?

We had a quantity of East Caribbean Dollars. When we offered these we generally got a scowl and they had to convert back to ECD. In a supermarket however ECB was the norm as it was not a tourist trap (we were buying fruit and water).

USD were wholly acceptable in Russia and Euros in non-Euro countries. Imagine asking an ice cream kiosk in UK if they took Euros.
