Is it safe at night?

We are going to be in San Juan on a Sunday until 11:30 p.m.

We're doing a rainforest tour until 5:30. We do want to walk around San Juan - Paseo de la Princesa - that evening. Should we do that right after our excursion and eat later on the ship or is it safe anytime like 8:00 or 9:00 to walk around if we decide to eat on the ship first?

The Paseo is well patrolled by local police, and the US Coast Guard station is right there too. It's also very popular with locals and there's usually music and crafts on the weekends. You would be safe to walk there at night.

However, I think the walk along the city walls all the way to El Morro, is spectacular at dusk, so if you're not starving and dead tired after El Yunque, you may want to consider doing that first. You would walk to the end of the Paseo de la Princesa and past the city gate to get there. I would not take that walk (the paseo along the city walls, I mean) after dark, don't even know what time the Park Service closes the gates. HTH!

OSJ is safe at night. There are special police that patrol all around the area to keep it safe. There is the occasional beggar or street person, but far fewer than in other ports. And these people are not aggressive at all.

Don't worry, you will be fine.

But you should take all the usual precautions you would anywhere- don't flaunt money then walk down deserted alleys etc.
