sledman Posted September 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Due to sail on the Sensation in two weeks. As you all know Grand Cayman took a hard hit from Ivan. :( We are sailing out of Tampa and I assume we are still going to Coz. Carnival has not said yet what the new port will be. Need your best guess as to were Carnival will take us instead of going to GC. This is our first cruise and can't wait to start a great vacation. I know you won't know 100% which port, just need some ideas so I can start researching. Thank you, Shane
tjatczak Posted September 15, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 15, 2004 My guess is "extra" sea day! Not much eslse is left that could be reached. (Jamacia is out) I only see Key West????? We are going in 4 weeks, so we are wondering also! Ted
Zeta3 Posted September 15, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Just guessing but maybe Costa Maya or Play Del Carmen if not simply a sea day.
the_monkey Posted September 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Carnival is still trying to figure out what to substitute for GC. We sail this Saturday on the Triumph, and when I called Carnival earlier today, they were still saying we were going to GC - which is just not going to happen. I know GC was expecting at least 4 cruise ships a day nearly every day this month, and now all the lines are scrambling to find a different port. Look at it as an adventure. What else can you do? :)
judyjbest Posted September 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 15, 2004 I noticed that some of the rerouted itineraries last week went to Progresso, so I'd say that's a definite possibility.
lmondrop Posted September 15, 2004 #6 Share Posted September 15, 2004 At least you have your full 7 days....Ours got cut by 2 days and we left at 10 pm =(
ArkansasFish Posted September 15, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Is Belieze, or Roatan on your route? I have heard of ships doing 2 days at Cozumel too.
DFD1 Posted September 15, 2004 #8 Share Posted September 15, 2004 I would guess Key West because of travel time from Tampa. However, the queston of dock space may make that unworkable. Too bad it can't be Havana.
NinaCO Posted September 15, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Well, this week they substituted Nassau for Grand Cayman on Sensation. I think the best thing to do is to keep checking Carnival's web site. They are posting all the changes there. The one thing you can count on is that you won't be visiting Grand Cayman in two weeks. The island was devastated, and they're seeking humanitarian aid. :(
sledman Posted September 16, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted September 16, 2004 Thanks for you help. I thought it may be Costa Maya or Playa del Carma. Never thought about two days in Coz. or Pregresso or the Keys. Just hope it's not a "sea day" I am looking forward to the ports. Shane
roohound Posted September 16, 2004 #11 Share Posted September 16, 2004 Jamaica is not out..both Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are accepting cruise ships so I'm guessing that would be a possibility
QTPieRye Posted September 16, 2004 #12 Share Posted September 16, 2004 RooHound..... Where did you get that information about Montegy Bay and Ochos Rios? Carnival has said they plan on going to Mo Bay next week on the Conquest, but I just don't see how after watching the news???
roohound Posted September 16, 2004 #13 Share Posted September 16, 2004 right here from the hurricane updates listed on Cruise Critic's home page: Jamaica's got good news. Just a few days after Hurricane Ivan brushed past the island with its Category Five winds, Jamaica is ready to begin welcoming cruise ships. Princess' Caribbean Princess has already visited Montego Bay and Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas spent the day at Ocho Rios. http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=1164
luv2travel! Posted September 16, 2004 #14 Share Posted September 16, 2004 The Carnival Triumph is going to Costa Maya in place of GC
glrounds Posted September 16, 2004 #15 Share Posted September 16, 2004 I would guess Key West, although an "extra sea day" is most likely what you'll get. Progresso would really be nice. This one's a sleeper. Went there on a GLORY cruise. This port will really turn into a great stop some day. :)
IBEEMOM Posted September 16, 2004 #16 Share Posted September 16, 2004 No matter where you will go, if not GC, I hope you have a wonderful first cruise. We were to visit the island last December and the sea was too rough. The port authority wouldn't let the tenders leave the dock, so we didnot get to visit. This can happen at any port that has tenders. Good luck and have a ball!!

sledman Posted September 16, 2004 Author #18 Share Posted September 16, 2004 Thanks IBEEMOM, We are very VERY excited! When we booked several months ago hurricane season did not even cross my mind. (Have not had to many of those to look out for here in Idaho :) ) Jump'nJack, I have been looking at Costa Maya, this looks like it would be a fun port. If Carnival would just make up there mind about what they will do with us once we are captive on the ship I could start looking at excursions. o2bonn Posted September 17, 2004 #19 Share Posted September 17, 2004 In my opinion, Progresso or Costa Maya are poor substitutes. First both are mexican ports of call (like Cozumel). Second, neither has the exotic beaches and activities (stingrays) that GC has.
hstrybuf Posted September 17, 2004 #20 Share Posted September 17, 2004 IF you go to Costa Maya, enjoy the port area but also go into Mahahual. We loved sitting in the shade, digging our toes in the sand and putting away a few drinks. I had a massage on the beach there for $20 + tip. :)

estebofarr Posted September 17, 2004 #24 Share Posted September 17, 2004 Shane, I talked to Carnival yesterday and he said (and I am not making this up) You will go to Grand Cayman in two weeks. They did not have a lot of damage! They will clean it up in no time. Janis
hstrybuf Posted September 17, 2004 #25 Share Posted September 17, 2004 Thanks for the link! We have GC on our itinerary in 6 weeks. Looks like it could still be "iffy" for us to stop there. I hope all goes as well for the people of Grand Cayman as Matteo has predicted.
