Scrapchick Posted January 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2008 We will be getting off the Sapphire Princess in Auckland and have 24 hours to kill in Auckland before flying home the next day. We would love to take a tour, or rent a car, somehow. We are staying at a hotel out near the airport and are wondering what to do with all our luggage. We don't really want to be taking taxis back and forth from the ship to the hotel just to dump bags so can be free to move around the city, and are concerned that if we hire a car in central Auckland, we might not be able to return it at the airport. Any advice on how to handle all of our bags once we get off the ship in Auckland? Thanks!
mochuck Posted January 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2008 I'm sure you could hire a car in central Auckland and return it to the airport. All the major car rental companies will have an office at the airport as well as downtown.

You wont have any problem renting a car and leaving it at airport there are at least six or seven car firms with depots at airport! However Auckland is a fabulous place to spend 24 hours (or a week) and easy to get around with "hop on hop off" free buses so you wont really need the car. Drop your stuff at the hotel, come back into town, take a ride up Skytower, drop a couple of dollars in the Casino downstairs, take a ferry ride over to Davenport and check out the cute shops, ride the free bus around to see the sights over there. Come back in the evening and have a wine and a fabulous meal dockside where the America's Cup yachts were moored and I haven't even scratched the surface of possibilities. Trust me you will want to go back for a longer stay. Almost forgot, hope the day isn't Sunday...our Kiwi cousins shut down for Sundays.

sailingkiwi Posted February 3, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 3, 2008 We will actually dock in Auckland on a Sunday - what attractions or services will be shut down on a Sunday? Unless you are docking on Easter Sunday then attractions and shops will be open. There may be slightly reduced hours or in the case of public transport slightly fewer services and maybe fewer people on the streets but that will be about it. tobes Posted February 4, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2008 Check with Princess because Celebrity had a plan for those of us in that same position. They put our luggage on a bus, took us to a hotel where they had a hospitality (big!) room with coffee, tea, etc. and we left our carry on stuff in that room where it was tagged and watched by Celebrity personnel. They had a chart showing what time to come back for a ride to the airport. It all ran very smoothly. The cruise lines all seem to do similar things. Holland America was in the hotel that same day too so I bet Princess has some plan also.:) We will be getting off the Sapphire Princess in Auckland and have 24 hours to kill in Auckland before flying home the next day.
