Is there a beach near the port? How close is the nearest beach?

 

The nearest public beach is at Fort Zachery Taylor which you get to through the Truman Annex which is a few blocks down Whitehead Street from the docks. There is a charge and you can get snacks and soft drinks. People always comment on how rocky the ground is just into the water.

There is also a nice place at the Key West Bight maybe 1/2 mile away that has a big, but shallow pool called Dante's. As long as you order a drink you can use the pool, and the food is OK there.

 

Next closest without sneaking onto the grounds of the Pier House is all the way south on Duval Street, the old Duval Beach Club. For $5.00 a person you get a chair and IIRC a towel, but the bar there is OK with decent food.
