darladelight Posted February 3, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2008 My ship is sailing this week and I am trying not to get too excited about going to the Cayman islands. From reading these boards, I understand that it is frequently missed becasue of bad weather. What happens then if the port is indeed missed? Does the ship float in the water all day? or does it go on to the next port? Are the Casinos reopend? Are there more on board activities to bide our time? Thanks in advance
Scorpiorose Posted February 3, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2008 they take the long slow way to the next port. Yes, they open everything back up and sometimes, depending of if other ports have also been missed they may give a small on board credit, enough for a couple drinks or more maybe. They have a plan B if ports are missed.
Micki Dee Posted February 3, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 3, 2008 We sailed in Oct., and missed both of our ports of call (Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios) due to a tropical storm and the Cpt was able to find substitute ports for us. This is not always possible, but we were very lucky and our Cpt. did a fabulous job of getting us some alternatives.
veryhotred Posted February 3, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2008 Wow I didn't think of the EOS missing Grand Cayman or Ocho Rios! I took this same cruise 12/07 and we made both ports. Grand Cayman is oh so nice!! The weather was perfect and the water is so clear. The weather the entire cruise was perfect!! The water was calm the entire time too. Have a great cruise! Trainman-2 Posted February 3, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 3, 2008 It is possible that a ship could not tender people ashore due to high waves on a day that is bright and sunny with almost no wind. The best answer is "It Depends!" It could be another sea day with lots of scheduled sea day activities or they may be able to find another port. "It Depends!" lady_cruiser Posted February 4, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2008 There is no guaranteed that if you miss a port because of bad weather that you will get any compenstation. On our recent cruise (week of Jan 13th) on the Voyager we could not go to Costa Maya, as planned, because of the hurricane that destroyed the port. We did not get any OBC or partial refund. We had an extra day at sea. Read all the fine prints in your DOCS - that is just part of cruising and the chances you take.
debshomespun Posted February 4, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2008 We were just on the Enchantment 1-26 cruise, and we missed Grand Cayman. We were not compensated anything. There were high winds, and rough seas, and the Harbour master closed the port. Our captain cruised around Grand Cayman once, then zig zagged over to Ochos Rios, which we arrived by late evening, and just cruised around Jamaica until 7:00AM the next morning. We were supposed to dock in Ochos Rios at 8:00AM, so we got in 1 hour early. During the extra sea day, the casinos are open, along with all the shops on board. They will have many activities planned for the day, and will revise the daily compass and pass them out as early as possible so everyone knows what is going on. The ports are missed for the safety of the passengers The islands loose alot of revenue when the ships can't get in, so no one wants to see this happen. Wow, I never thought that it would happen for some reason when I went on the EOS. How long were you in Ocho Rios? We were only there until 1:30pm, was when the ship was still having troubles so it was having to go slower and thus taking longer to get back to Ft. Lauderdale. Sorry you missed Grand Cayman, Seven Mile Beach was wonderful! I missed Coco Cay on the SOS, was really bummed as we looked forward to seeing it. Lyncruiser Posted February 4, 2008 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2008 We've missed Coco Cay twice in two tries! The first time, the captain opened the bars for free drinks for an hour or so. We had a sea day. The second time which was last October, we went to San Juan instead. We had a nice afternoon there and appreciated RCCL's efforts to find an alternative port for us on short notice. Married on Enchantment Posted February 4, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 4, 2008 We missed Bermuda back in April and got 35$ each back for port charges and gained an extra port for no extra charge. Jarrad
