Downside to booking 2 diff. fare buckets?

Four of us are flying to SJU, the price for 2 is lower than for 4. If I purchase two in the lower bucket and then the other 2 at the higher fare (all in coach), are there any problems to consider?

No-UNLESS the tickets have different fare rules. READ the fine print, please.

 

It appears there are only two of the cheaper tickets available.

 

If all are in coach and all are in non refundable fare buckets with the same fare rules, you essentially have the same tickets.

I think that the only real issues that you might have are the fact that your group is now split across two reservations records. You can ask the airline to link them (and it would be a good idea to do so), but that is usually no more than a memo recorded in the booking, which might get overlooked by stressed agents if there is a big problem (which is the time when the linking would be most valuable). So if there are irregular operations, for example, you might find that two people get re-routed in one direction and two people get re-routed in another. But these are unlikely possibilities, and you can head off some of the problems if things are being changed when you're there in person.

 

You don't say who the group of four is, but if there are children involved then it might be worth putting one adult in each booking, just as insurance against the remote possibility that this might happen.

Thanks to both of you! I will reread the rules, but both are nonrefundable. It is my mom, myself and 2 DDs (20yo). I was thinking about putting 1DD with me and 1DD with my DM (that way DD can help DM).
