What's the difference between 1st & 2nd class on Italian trains

We will be using the train from the port to Rome with large luggage, so which class would be better for us. THANKS ALL

We always opt for 1st class... more comfortable seating, not as crowded, usually no children running up and down the aisles, usually no families bringing food onboard that tends to permeate the surrounding air. If you're only traveling short distances I guess it might be a toss up but for more than 2 hours... 1st class is so much better.

The train between Civ-Rome is a commuter link. I don't recall that they were running 1st class cars when we made that roundtrip in June. I guess they were, and it's your moola, but truly, it's not a big deal for that short of a run.

 

If you plan to use the subways or buses to get around Rome later that day, the most economical ticket you can purchase at the Civ station is the 9E (this summer's cost) per person BIRG, which gives you unlimited trips on the local commuter trains (except express trains) and city subways and buses for 24 hours.

 

You can print off a detailed train schedule with intermediate stops listed at http://www.trenitalia.com Note that the St Peter's stop is popular with many visiting on a port day. You might be able to figure out a stop other than Termini that works better for you getting to your hotel.
