travelgurl Posted February 14, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2008 I just received a second offer for an upsell to A2 deluxe owners suite on The Gem for 2/23. We are in an AD category now ( our first aft cabin!) The first offer was for $1500 pp for $3000 extra which we of course turned down. Now the offer is half that at $750 pp for $1500 total. I don't feel compelled to "jump on it" but I am entertaining it. What would you do? Thanks! Mary

travelgurl Posted February 14, 2008 Author #7 Share Posted February 14, 2008 Well I tried a counter offer which was a no go. They also offered the A4 for an additional 500pp. Gotta check with my DH.

You have your own private sundeck & hot tub and a fantastic view of the pool deck. You also get to use the private sundeck & courtyard & their amenites. Cagneys's is right below for breakfast & lunch. You can't use the Courtyard even though you are in a penthouse. We just got back from the Garden Villa. Check out our pics, you have the same view as from our living room. Happy Cruising, Monty
travelgurl Posted February 14, 2008 Author #9 Share Posted February 14, 2008 :D Well...... WE DID IT!! I can't even believe it but we did it. They accepted a slightly lower offer. The Aft experience will have to wait for another cruise. I doubt the A2 experience will be coming around again too soon. Thanks for all your feedback. I'm psyched!! Administrators Rare CC Help Michell Posted February 15, 2008 Administrators #11 Share Posted February 15, 2008 :D Well...... WE DID IT!! I can't even believe it but we did it. They accepted a slightly lower offer. The Aft experience will have to wait for another cruise. I doubt the A2 experience will be coming around again too soon. Thanks for all your feedback. I'm psyched!! I think that was a great choice, especially since you rejected a prior offer at 100% more than you wound up paying, and this time you made 2 counteroffers, so you know you "bargained" to get it. It will be a cruise you will never forget! We've had an Aft AE booked for '09 on the Dawn since last August.... with a notation on our booking "no upgrades without contacting passenger." We're thrilled with what we have (as you were) so I think we are in the best of all worlds, as you were -- free to be choosy IF the upsell fairy comes knocking, since you know you'll be happy with what you have if that doesn't happen. :)

We had an upsell from our AE to the A2 on the Pearl to Alaska last summer. We did enjoy it and will miss that fabulous balcony with private hot tub when we cruise to Alaska this May (unless another upsell comes along). You'll love the VIP treatment and special seating for the shows. The only disadvantage of the Deluxe Owner's Suite is the staircase you have to climb, but, hey, we didn't gain any weight on our last cruise! Take a look at my pictures of the A2 from the Pearl. The Gem will probably be very similar. ENJOY!

My husband really enjoyed the pampering in the Deluxe Owner's Suite since he had a very demanding job with a very stressful commute to work--the private hot tub works miracles!:D We never really had any rough seas on our cruise but some rain and heavy winds (40 knots) that almost blew the furniture off our balcony. One night it was so windy it felt like someone was shaking the bed and the vibration caused the sliding glass door to keep opening until I put on the child-proof lock. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Sandy-

I guess as soon as we get there he'll know something is up when we get escorted onto the ship. I suppose I could tell him "its part of the new 2.0"! It sounds like the wind can be a bit scary.... I do have a question...Do you know if you can substitute any of the liquor with wine? I'm not really a hard liquor drinker but do like wine. What kind of liquor, do they give you a selection? Just curious. Thanks! We were also on the Gem recently in a courtyard villa and It was awesome. The stairs are so handy to the elevators and the view is to die for. You made a great choice. EileenN Posted February 16, 2008 #19 Share Posted February 16, 2008 Often people don't realize that if they receive a comp/gift of sparkling wine in the cabin and do not like it, talk to your butler/steward and usually it can be exchanged for a nice bottle of red or white. If you do not drink alcohol, you can get sparkling cider.

What kind of liquor, do they give you a selection? Just curious. Thanks! Mary Hi, Mary. We got the 3 bottles of liquor from the list they gave us even though we don't usually drink hard liquor either. I really don't remember what was on the list-- things like Kahlua, gin, whiskey, rum, vodka. Our butler helped us pack up the 3 bottles and we brought them home. I do remember reading that someone had asked their butler (or concierge) about changing their choices to wine and they did it. So just ask! And they're really good about keeping the frig full of pop and bottled water. Take advantage of breakfast and/or lunch in Cagney's whenever you can. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. The concierge, butler, room stewards are all eager to help to make sure you have a great cruise! Remember you are in the second best cabin on the ship! And they don't know that you got it through an upsell!:D
