Need to know quality of Journey's medical facilities

We have an upcoming cruise in two weeks. Some medical problems have reared themselves and my Dr's are debating whether I am well enough to go. I was wondering if anyone can comment on the medical facilities and medical staff on the ship? Thank you.

Hi Stan !

I would love to offer you a definitive answer, but I am not qualified to offer any medical advice. The best I can do, is tell you they do have a medical staff onboard and a medical facility. In all honesty, if your illness is severe, I would think hard about being in a foreign location without my own Doctors nearby. What do your Doctors have to say about you taking a Cruise ?

As much as I hate to cancel any cruise, it might be your best option. Did you take the Cruise insurance ? I sincerely wish you all the very best, and I hope you make a speedy recovery.

We sailed on the Journey in January and my husband needed to use the medical facilities every day. There was a doctor and two nurses available. He received very good care as did others who he met in the medical office. Andy is right, maybe you shouldn't go, but if you do, I think you will receive good care.

If I were concerned about recent heart problems or concerns (and you asked about EKGs, so that's an assumption) I would not want to be getting on a cruise ship. While they do have a lot of diagnostic equipment, they certainly don't have the caability that a cath lab would have, can't do bypass operations, probably can't do an echocardiogram,....and the places they could put you ashore might not have that capacity either.

Be very careful with heart problems. I have been on two cruises where the person with heart problems was put off the ship in a foreign port. The cruise line will not allow you to continue your trip if they think you might need a hospital. In both these cases the person thought they recovered from a heart condition enough to complete the cruise, but off they went. The cruise line does not want the liability. So, if you get a heart attack you will be put off the ship.

I forgot to mention that I got a call back from a Medical Facility Specialist for RCCL. The woman was very pleasant and gave me her email and phone # in case any of the Dr's wanted to contact her. I have been pleased with all the customer service contacts that I have had with AZ versus others on the boards. Hope to be leaving March 9th.

I am checking with my Dr's to determine if it is okay to go and will follow their advice. How bad can it be to sit on a ship have someone make your bed and have 3 squares a day?

Being sent to the hospital at a foreign port, or a medical evacuation or dying on the ship could would be bad.....
