Mines Posted February 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Is this a troll? A transatlantic is always a repositioning, but a repositioning does not always cross the Atlantic.
cot427 Posted February 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Transatlantic means that you cross the Atlantic Ocean. A repositioning cruise doesn't necessarily mean crossing the Atlantic. It could mean for instance Tampa to Baltimore, like the Grandeur does in April. They call that a repositioning cruise. But, a tranatlantic is always a repo because it changes homeports. Repo not always transatlantic like the Grandeurs case.
Bean72 Posted February 23, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 23, 2008 I didn't know the answer either... does that make me a troll too?
Merion_Mom Posted February 23, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Is this a troll? A transatlantic is always a repositioning, but a repositioning does not always cross the Atlantic. Was that really necessary, mines? wdhuckster, a transatlantic cruise goes ACROSS (trans) the OCEAN (atlantic). A repositioning cruise takes a ship from one "home port" to another "home port" for the season. For example, the Grandeur sails out of Baltimore in the summer and fall, then repositions to and sails out of Tampa in the winter and spring. The Empress was sailing out of Philadelphia this summer, then repositioned to San Juan for its winter cruises.

MakinGold Posted February 23, 2008 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2008 BTW, It's not necessarily true that a transatlantic is always a repositioning. I don't know that any ships are doing so in recent years, but going back and forth across the Atlantic can be the normal routine for a ship. That's been done in the past mostly by ocean liners like the QE2 than what we think of as "cruise ships" today. So, where RCI ships are concerned, a transatlantic is a repositioning, but that is not true by definition.

Mines Posted February 25, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 25, 2008 Ok everyone. I apologise for the comment. It just seemed quite obvious to me. But then again, perhaps it is not that obvious. The RCL website has a destination called "repositioning" but not all repositioning cruises are listed. They have a separate destination called "transatlantic", so this is probably where the confusion sets in. ALL RCL and Celebrity transatlantic cruises are repositioning cruises, because they reposition the ship from the Carbbean to Europe (or vice versa). P & O, Cunard and HAL have transatlantic cruises that are not repositioning because they go and come back. There are many small lines that have world cruises with a transatlantic section - these are not repositioning either.
