Straw Market

We are only going to be in Nassau from 1 -6p which isn't much time to do anything. DH & DS will amuse themselves on the ship at the casino, sports bar and golf simulator. I was thinking of taking 17 yo DD to straw market. Is it within walking distance of the dock or is a taxi the best way to get there?

Thanks

Definitely walkable.

As you get out of the port area, make a right on the first street and it's easy walking distance...market is on the left. DD should have a great time looking at all the designer knock offs...if you buy make sure you bargain, it is more than expected!! My sister got a Prada knock off that is awesome and only paid $25. Senor Frog is right next door, if you don't mind your daughter being in place that can get wild and crazy it's a decent place for a cold drink and people watching!;)

We've not walked to Senor Frogs after dinner but have walked back to the ship after dark. There are the usual panhandlers, hairbraiders etc but not as bad as in Jamaica (IMO), there seems to be a lot of security people around and inside the port area. My sister and I walked back to the ship in the dark in Nov, felt a bit nervous but I had a whistle on my key ring (you can cause a lot of bodily harm with a whistle, little know fact, ha ha). Weren't hassled at all, we just keep our heads up, eyes forward and no probs. Senor Frogs has always been a fun place to have a drink-have been three times, in fact we usually eat dinner or munchies there as it's easier to get service at a table than in the bar area...again, just my opinion. ;)

Would it be safe after dark to walk down to Senior Frogs after dinner on the ship?

Not sure of your group size and demographics, but Nassau is a modern city of 200,000 people. Security near the port is tight, but take whatever precautions you'd normally take after dark in downtown Pittsburgh, Cincinnatti, etc.

The ship's casino will be closed when the ship is in port. There are casinos in Nassau and they won't let ships compete with them. Some of the ship's bars will remain open. Golf simulator....maybe. Check operating hours when you board.

Actually, Carnival has (once had?) a special gaming license with the Bahamas to operate their casino in port for their ships that are overnighting in port. Things may have changed recently, but as of our Labor Day 2007 cruise, the Sensation casino opened after dinner while we were docked in Nassau.
