rum.cruz Posted February 27, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2008 We are booked on the Regatta (first time Oceania) for the November Amazon trip. Unable to find out if we need yellow fever shots or not, as this cruise does include Brazil. Nobody, even the cruiseline, seems to know for sure. Does anybody out there know? Thanks. Agr8RN Posted February 27, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2008 Go to this link at the CDC, there have been 16 deaths recently, and many confirmed cases. http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentYellowFeverBrazil.aspx Here's a link to the clinics where you can get the shot: http://www2.ncid.cdc.gov/travel/yellowfever/ It recommends getting the vaccination at least 10 days prior to your cruise / visit to the country. Have a great time on Oceania.
Shorex Posted February 27, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 27, 2008 Just two weeks ago DH and I got the yellow fever shots from our county health department. Here's what we learned: The Center for Disease Control has information on its website for Brazil. The other factor to consider is whether other countries on your cruise require proof of yellow fever vaccination for anyone who has recently visited Brazil. Call your local county department of health. They have maps of yellow fever areas in each country. Yellow fever vaccinations are given in groups because the vial of vaccine expires shortly after opening. We needed a three week lead time for an appointment. BTW, the shot itself is painless, barely a pin prick. :)

Druke I Posted February 27, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 27, 2008 When we did the Amazon, Yellow Fever shots were required. We've also been to the coast of Brazil (Rio & Recife) on another cruise, and yellow fever was not required. That said, the requirements are constantly changing. Check with a Travel Health Center, local Health Department, or CDC.
Rare FlyerTalker Posted February 28, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 28, 2008 If I was going down/up the Amazon, I'd have every shot in the book. Add to that some malaria prophylactic treatment and plenty of insect repellent. Too many nasty things in that part of the world to go unprepared and untreated. Why go unprotected? The answer to that question should be illuminating.
Aussie Gal Posted February 28, 2008 #8 Share Posted February 28, 2008 We did the Amazon in 2006 and we were not allowed on board our HAL ship unless we had proof that we had yellow fever injections plus the visa for Brazil. Also if we have been to a country that has yellow fever, then we have to have had the injection before being allowed back into Australia. It is well worth having it and it certainly doesn't hurt. We also had injections for cholera, hepatitus and meningococcal as well as a booster for polio. Our Health Department recommended all of these before travelling in Brazil. hondorner Posted February 28, 2008 #9 Share Posted February 28, 2008 If I was going down/up the Amazon, I'd have every shot in the book. Add to that some malaria prophylactic treatment and plenty of insect repellent. Too many nasty things in that part of the world to go unprepared and untreated. Why go unprotected? The answer to that question should be illuminating. We took the Regatta 26 day Amazon cruise in Nov., 2006. We had YF shots because they were required or we would not have been allowed to board the ship in Miami. We also purchased and used Malarone as a malaria preventive. We brought bug spray and "Bug Off" treated clothing. As it turned out, we never saw a single flying insect of any sort on the entire trip up and back down the Amazon, including the dugout canoe trip to the back waters of the Rio Negro. We wandered the cities of Santerem, Parintins and Manuas, and the village of Boca de Valeria, and never saw a bug. We sat on our balcony for hours at a time and never saw a bug. Apparently, the threat is greater at different times of the year, and November/December is apparently an excellent time to visit. The river was at it's lowest ebb. Aussie Gal Posted February 28, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 28, 2008 We also went in October 2006 and didn't see any sort of mosquito or bug. We sat out on our verandah each day and visited the same ports as Don and Betsy. In fact, we stopped taking our anti malarial tablets when we found out that the crew weren't taking any due it being the dry time of the year. My sister and brother in law did the cruise in April 2006 and they were in the middle of the wet season. They saw a completely different Amazon to us and they had to take all the precautions to prevent malaria. Jennie
Nitrodog Posted February 28, 2008 #11 Share Posted February 28, 2008 Going up the Amazon....you absolutely require YF shot. The good thing is that it's good for 10 years.

Article in the Toronto newspaper last week reports yellow fever outbreak and recommends that you have yellow fever shots if you plan to go to Igacu Falls. We will be there after cruise on Oceania Insignia in Feb 09 and certainly be getting the yellow fever shots before we go
